London,. February 20. ■•' It is understood that the Government lias ordered a levisiou of all exemptions of men under V 36 years of age. The Army's principal need is men. fit for any service, especially trench warfaro. _ If those are not secured by "combing out" industries and civil employment, ijb may be necessary to raise the military : ago to fifty. Mr. J. Hodge (Minister of Labour), in a speech, at Nottingham, urged all capablo of helping to join voluntarily in national service, especially in tho steel works and shipyards They must not make any hones about it. If voluntaryism failed, .workers would Iβ taken willy-nilly. ,
Mr. Neville.Chamberlain, at a meeting of the Stock Exchange, said that the problem of organising : tho manpower of tho nation"waa-so complex that it could not lie solved without the nation's willing help. The war was rapidly approaching .a crisis. He believed it would finish this summer; but we would only beat tho enemy if we put our whole strength into the contost.- He suggested that clerks might servo two brokers when possible, and that the Exchange shouldbe closed for a day, or part of a day, each_weok, in, order to release men for national sfrvice. He urged stockbrokers to consult a representative of his Department regarding tho suggestions. The Army Council has adopted a scheme for substituting women for men where possible in Army work' in Trance and England. It has established a new branch, in Piccadilly, where candidates are selected and enrolled. Already 30,000 British Tomon 'arc in France as waitresses, cooks, and motor-drivers.—Ans.-N.Z. Gable Assn.
