The Eiverina arrived in port early yesterday morning, after a smart trip from Sydney direct, during which moderate weather was experienced. She berthed at No. 1 North Quecn'e Wharf, and commenced discbarc'" of her carso. With tho vessel oamo tho flrafe news of a mishap which occurred on tho ii»y from Wellington to Sydney on her la:t trip. slopped for about three hours while temporary repairs were efl'ectwl. The vessel then proceeded on at half-speed, and on arrival in the harbour was assisted to the wharves by two tugs. She leaves here «t 5 p.m. to-dny for Lytteltou. NEW WELLINGTON TONNAGE EECOEB. On June 19, 1516, a record tonnage ot vessels in the port was constituted, there being forty-four vessels, totalling tons gross, in Wellington Harbour. This did not, of course, include any of the email ferry vessels or tugs which do not leave the port but only vessels which trade outside. Yesterday this record wa<; broken by a good margin, however. A list compiled showed that although there were only thirty-seven vessels in the port the total tonnage was 95.036 gross, an increase of <05 tons, on the June, J916, figures. Although the largo amount of tonnage in port ie accounted for by some as owing to tho labour trouble here, this is not correct, as tho majority of the vessels arrived in port during the week-end, and only started work yesterday morning. There were probably only two which could have got away last week, and theso were amongst tlie small vessels on the list. All the vessels were working yesterday, and the wharves especially the northern end, were presenting an exceptionally biwy Eceno.
VICTORIAN STATE SHIPBUILDING. The Victorian Minietry intends to carry out its decision of last year to appoint a manager to tho Slate shipbuilding yards at a salary of £1500 <v year. Though very little busine.~B is beans done, and though the difficulty of obtaining materials has prevented contracts being accepted, the Ministry is hopeful that the manager will be able to solve aIP existing difficulties, and place the yard-, on a sound footing.' Over seventy applications for tho position were received, but only three are being considered. The Agent-General (Sir Peli'r M'Bride) has been asked t-o inquire into tho qualifications of the three men in Great Britain who are considered to be suitable to fill tho post. LOSS OF THE AFPJC. When the White Star Line decided to enter tho Australian passenger trade about 16 years ago, tho first steamer to arrive was tho Medic, which was followed by the Afric and Persic, then tho Suevic and Hunic. All of these vessels have big oaseeni-er accommodation, aud are specially fitted for tho carriage of frozen cargoes. The Afric was built by Messrs. Hartand and Wolff of Belfast in 1899. She was a. steel twin-screw four-masted steamer, of 11,999 gross tons,' 550 feet 2 inches long, 63 feet 3 inches beam, and.31 feet 9 inches in depth. It 13 staled that the Afric, with two other steamers, were the first vessels to leave ■ Sydney with troops, nnd during the whole of her career she was practically free ot accidents. She has only been to J.ew Zealand once, and that -was when she visited Auckland last year to load for England. Her visit was not mentioned in tho Press at the timo. owins to her being under Admiralty orders.
GOVERNMENT STEAMEKS. Mr. G. Allport. Secretary for Marine, advises that tho taurine steamer Amokura, which was originally to have gpno north, will now leave here to-morrow for the southern outlying islands. She should leavo Duncdin or Bluff about ten days after leaving here, for tho islands. Which_ port she will eventually ea.il from hoe

Pryde, third mate,'has come ashore from the Ncakuta. Mr. M. A. Scott has joined the Kowhai as chief ou&ineer, and Mr. F. H. It. Stidolph third engineer of the same vessel, has come ashore. Mr. P.
