CHESS AND DRAUGHTS
WORKING MEN'S CLUB. The annual draughts tourney of the Working Men's Club was concluded last week, the best scores being made by the following:—W. H. Smith, 28-J; M'Pherson, 27; Burgess, 27; C. Reid, 24; and Hedderwick, 23. When the sealed handicaps were added it was found that tho five prizes woro won as follow:—First, Hedderwick (35); second, Coulter (31J); third, Burgess (31); fourth, W. H. Smith (285); and fifth, C. 'Reid (28). Air. Smith takes the secretary's special prize for tho best score, apart from the sealed handicap. Tho club's 1916 chess tourney, as alTcady announced, has been vcon by Mr. H. Douglas, who therefore holds the Staples Trophy for tho year. Tho remaining prizes have been won as follow:—Second, Peake; third, Larking; fourth, Featonby; fifth, sixth, and seventh divided by Messrs. Wild, Hicks, and C. R«id. Mr. G-. Gray's special prize for tho test score against the prizewinners has been won by Mr. Mayne. When the above prizes are presented on Friday criming by the president (Mr. Mace), an endeavour will be made to introduce new conditions, so as to ensure the draughts championship being competed for annually. * Tho annual tourney to decido tho championship of tho Wellington South Chess Club is to commence next Thursday. As usual, the contest is limited to tho eight strongest players available. It
is -understood that the competitors will include Mr. Purchas, the present champion, and. also several of the club's tourney winners.
