■BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING,

• Mr. J. W. M'Evran presided over tho ordinary meeting of the Petone Borough Council, held last evening. The Borough Engineer,- in his report, stated that the- tennis courts had been neglected by the ladies 6inee Christmas, though tho lawn was in excellent condition. Satisfactory conditions obtained at the waterworks, tho consumption at night being, • however, spniewhat greater than it should ht.. The sewerage engineer reported that tests had clearly demonstrated that the pumps were more than fulfilling the contractor's guarantee. The pumps had been running for over 12 months, and the cost of maintenance had been only 3s. 6d. The whole of tho machinery was - Riving entire satisfaction. .

Tho 'Works Committee reported that it had inquired, into the complaint of the sewerage employees regarding their non-employment on tho 'Woollen' Mills dam job (luring the Christmas holidays. The committee found that while a misundbrstanding might have arisen, it had no recommendation to make. The report was- adopted. Tho Gas Committee recommended that tho proposal to purchase a motor chassis for cartage work be not entertained at present. The recommendation was adopted. The Health Inspector notified four cases of infectious diseases in the borough. An application for permission to hold a combined church parade of Boy Scouts on the Recreation Ground on February £5, with authority to take up a collection, was granted. The Mayor was appointed delegate to a conference to be held with the object of discussing the Government's hydro-elec-tric power supply scheme for the Wellington district. A resolution of the Lower Hutt Borough Council in reward to the ragwort pest met with support. A resolution of tho Hawera Borough Council urging that the Minister classify the men of the second division before they are balloted also met with support.
