THE VOTE IN BRITAIN

GREAT ADULT SUFFRAGE DEMONSTRATION London, February 11. The National Council for Adult Suffrage held a great meeting in London. Whilst welcoming the resolutions passed at tbo Speaker's Conference as a step in the right direction, the council urged the Government to introduce a, simple and generous franchise for adult men and women. Among others present were Air. Appleton, secretary of the General Federation of Trades Unions, and Labour Adviser to Mr. Neville Chamberlain (Director of National Service); Mr. G. J. Wardlo, Labour M.P. for Stockport; and Mr. Williams,, of the National Transporters' Federation. Mr. J. L. Garvin (editor of the "Observer") wrote, stating that he was a convert to adult suffrage, sinco tho war had shown that the progressive strength and vitality of the State- was dependent oil both sexes. ' Sir Jolm Simon agreed willi Mr. Garvin, and said ho hoped that the reform would bo carried out in an orderly and constitutional manner, with tho view of obtaining the State's acceptance of the principle of women's suffrage. Once Parliament removed tho barrier nothing would prevent tho water finding its level. The council resolved that it was essential to include wage-earning women and also wage-earners' wives in the suffrage.—Auß-N.Z. Cable !issn<
