Captain J. Hilton Brown, of_ the Canadian Seaforth Highlanders, is at present iu Wellington. Captairi Brown has been in charge of recruiting arrangements in tho Dominion of Canada.

Major W. H.'. Mcddings, N.Z.S.C, Assistant-Quartermastor-Genoral 'Canterbury military district, will command the Twenty-third Reinforcements. Captain R. S. Matthews, N.Z.S.C, Assist-ant-Adjutant-General Canterbury _ district, has taken up Major Medding's duties, and his late duties will he undertaken by Lieutenant D. M. Robertson, officer in charge of the sick and wounded soldiers' branch of the Canterbury district office. Lieutenant Brinslcy succeeds Lieutenant Robertson in the latter position.

The Bishop of Waiapu has been suffering from an attack of muscular rheumatism, and as a result of the doctor's orders has abandoned his trip to tho East Coast and Bay of Plenty. His Lordship hopes to be able to visit Opotiki later. Ho is at present laid up at Mr. A. B. Williams' Pukotiti residenco, at Waipiro Bay, and returns to Napier as soon as the doctor allows. Tho Rev. Father Peoples, who has been stationed at St. Anne's parish, Newtown, for the iwst ve years, leaves for Greymouth on Thursday. For Wednesday ovening tho parishioners have arranged a gathering to bid him goodbye. At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington War Relief Association Mr. L. I 0.. H. Tripp was elected chairman of the executive, vice Mr. Wm. FeTguson, and Mr. C. M. Luke was appointed vice-chairman.

Lieutenant F. G. Matthews, formerly private secretary to tho Hon. J. Allen, was married recently, and his follow private secretaries celebrated the event by making him a snitablo gift. Tho present was made by Mr.- AV. Crow. Mr. Matthews is with the Twenty-second Roinforcemcnts.

The cbanges mado in the local Catholio clergy involve tho transfer of the Rev. Father O'Connell, of St. Mary of tho Angels, Boulcott Street, to Wanganui. He will ho accompanied by the Rev. Father Ainsworth, formorly of Wellington.

Sir Arthur Hutledge, of Queensland, died in a private hospital iu Sydney on February 1. He was born in Penrith seventy-three years ago, and was_ wellknown in tho public and social life of Brisbane. He entered the Wesleyan ministry, but retired a few years later in order to practise as a barrister. For twenty years lio was a member of tho Queensland Legislative Assembly, and took an active part in the foundation of tho Commonwealth. Whilo a member of tho Queensland Assembly he introduced and passeeffhrough the Houso the Criminal Code drawn by Sir Samuel Griffith (now Chief Justice oTTne High Court). Tho code waß subsequently revised by tho late Sir Arthur Rutledge and :i commission of Judges and other legal experts. Tn 1879 ho introduced and passed the first Act which secured to widows and children the proceeds of insurance policies of deceased husbands and fathers against tho claims of crcdi-

Tho' news has been received in Australia of tiho death of Lieutenant John 11 ay, of the Gunningbar Station, Warren District, N.S.AT. Deceased was ft mcririer of tlio Royal Flying' Corps. A cahlo message has been received from Lieutenant W. L. Hooson (Wellington), of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who was wounded in France, that ho is returning to New Zealand for a few mouths' home service. Captain C. K. Gasquoine, son of Mrs. AV. C. Gasquoine, of Tinakori Road, Wellington, is in tho 10th Military Hospital, St. Omcr, France, with a lacerated scalp. Captain J. A. Hayward, deputyharbourmaster, who went into a, privato hospital last week, has been operated upon. He is now doing as well as can bo expected. Mr. Thomas Jordan, solicitor, of Mastertou, has enlisted for service abroad. Mr. M. C. O'Coiraell, J.P., who has resided in Masterton for tho last twenty years, left yesterday afternoon for the South Island. Mr. O'Connell has not vet decided where ho will make his permanent abode.

Miss N. B. Coad, M.A., lias been appointed to tho staff of tho Wellington Girls' College.
