OBITUARY

A VETERAN CRICKETER, Melbourne, February 10. Mr. Frank Allan, a member of the First Australian cricket eleven, is dead. —Press Association. The late Frank Allan was the crack bowler of Victoria when Lillywhite's team of 1876-7 toured the colonies. He was left-handed, and his success was such that his fellow-colonists styled him "the bowler of tho century." He was a. member of Dave Gregory's team to England in 1878, but did not live up to his reputation. One writer described him as being very deadly for a few overs but not possessing sufficient physique for a lengthy tour. He had his days of success, but in eleven a-side matches he only captured 26 wickets for 565 runs, average 21.7. Ho was a fairly useful bat, and on this tour made i\i eleven a-sidc matches 212, with an average of 10.6. Alexander Baiinerman stated a year or two ago that Allan possessed one of the most deceptive swerves of any bowler he ever mot. His best performances wero for his State against New South Wales, and his fine howling brought victory to his side more than once. Latterly Allan has contributed to the Press many interesting yarns of the old days of cricket. Allan was horn on December 2, 1849, and for many'years was employed in the Victorian Lands Department.
