EVANS BAY ROAD

AND THE PATENT SLIf COMPANY. A Commission, consisting of Mr. Riddell, S.M., and Mr. Roaclie, civil engineer, is at present inquiring into the position of tho Wellington Patent Slip Company, tho AVellington Harbour Board, and the City Council in regard to the Evans Bay Road at that point where it is proposed. that a. second small slip should bo built. The position is that according to an agreement mado with the Patent Slip Company, the Harbour Board has called on the company to erect a second slip. Tho city's intorest in tho project concerns the preservation of the road or tho construction of an alternative road round the back of the slip property, in order that a traffic road may be provided. The matter was referred to in committee at thetCity Council meeting on Thursday evenino;, and yesterday tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated that there was 1 a possibility of an arrangement being arrived'at in respect to the road. The feeling of the council was tliat they did not wish to throw any obstacles in tho way of the erection of a second slip as long as the interests of the public were conserved. It had been reported that if a road was mado round the back of the slin it would have to be on a 1 in 15 grade, which would be awkward for ordinary traffic, and an expensive bit of road to maice. The general idea was that an arrangement might he come to by the engineprs concorned to make the existing road available for traffic, and that as the works developed in ft vans Bay there would, in all nrobahility. be large quantities of spoil removed from the h'lls at the rear of the slip which would help to make an alternative road on the flat possible. The \fayor stated that the Cit.v Engineer (Mr. W. TT. Morton) had still to give evidence before the Coni'mission. He had taken a tally of the traffic passing over tlie road for a period of one week, and would produce the figures before the Commission.
