William Cunimings, charged with being an idlo and disorderly person in that lie had insufficient visible means of support pleaded guilty. After hearing further evidenco, Mr. Wilford raised a legal point. He stated that accused was charged that "whue being a bookmaker ho had made bets. The police, lie contended, had to prove that ho was a bookmaker when he made the bets, and he submitted thnt this had hot been done. Ho quoted legal decisions on tho point, and the Magistrate reserved his decision to consider the legal points. 1 OTHER CASES. Ellen Armitago and Dorothy Armitage, mother and daughter, for whom Mr. J. ,T. M'Grath appeared, and Alex. MTean, for whom Mr. P. Jackson appeared were charged -with using obscene , language, and pleaded not guilty. The other two were convicted, Ellen Armitage being fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment, and, M. Henry Bate was fined lfls., costs 135., and expenses for driving a. motor-ear at an excessive speed on the Queen's Drive. Wm. Gnlloway. on a similar charge, was fined 4fls. and costs. Wm. .Tames Williamson was fined •lfls. and costs 245., for driving a motor-car at an excessive speed. Edmund Powels. for now# n, bicycle on the wrong side of the Courtenay Place plantation was ordered to pay Court costs 75., and 'A. E. Wells, for failin." to stop his motor-cycle when so requested by a police constable, was fin«d 7s. and costs fa. Mia Brvant was ordered to pay Court costs 7s. for allowing fH-ock to wander. Abraham Levy M'Tlnff. for commencing the erection of a building without & permit, was fined and cos is 7s. BREACHES OF AWARDS. In the Magistrate's Court on-Thurs-day, the Inspector of Awards (G. H. Ligutfcot) claimed the sum of .£lO from Mrs. N Dickel, Di-oprietress of the Kelburn kiosk, for failing to keep a time and wages hook, find omitting" to post in a conspicuous place a. time-sheet. Slie was convicted and fined 10s. The Victoria Laundry Co. wa3 fined 10s for employing a female worker who had completed two years' employment, and paying her 225. j>er week instead of 255. J.
