A WARNING HINT
BRITISH PUBLIC URGED TO LIMIT FOOD, CONSUMPTION OR PREPARE FOR RATIONS (Rec. February 4, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 2. The Press Bureau states: "The Food Controller (Lord Devonport) issues a notice dwelling upon the urgent necessity of curtailing the consumption of food. He state's that it will only be possible to maintain an adequate margin to meet tho actual situation, and contingencies, by adopting a system of average apportionment. He is unwilling to adopt a system of compulsory rationing unless this should become necessary, but relies on the people's honour and sense of patriotism to observe voluntarily the following average weekly consumption per head:— Bread 4 lbs. Meat : 2ilbs. .' Sugar Jib. He points out that if everybody reduced their consumption by one pound of bread, and half a pound of meat every week the saving would amount to over a million tons of food in the year. _ Meanwhile, the machinery for rationing is being organised in case of necessity.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assrt.-Reu-ter. ; A TROUBLESOME FACT. /■ WORKERS' PRODIGALITY. (Rec. February 4, 5.5 p.m.) London,- February 3. The newspapers strongly approve of Lord Devmiport's announcement, pointing out that twelve loaves and lolbs. of meat per week should be ample for a household of six. Tho "Daily Chronicle" says: "The! troublesome fact is that since the war began the country's food consumption has shown an amazing increase, owing to the growth of incomes among tho workers. In some cases this has put an end to previous under-feeding,' but in most cases this meant spending that income upon the most obvious pleas-ures."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
