FOOD PROBLEM
LIMITING THE BEER OUTPUT

The Food Controller (Lord Devoriport) has decided, with the view of augmenting the supply of barley and sugar for purposes of food, and also in economising transport, labour, and fuel, that the beer output from April 1 shall be 70 per cent, of the output of the current financial year. The Government correspondingly restricts the release of wines and spirits in bond. Lord Devonport, explaining the beer restrictions, says that the question is bread versus beer, which has now dim? inished by half since the war, saving 286,000 tons of barley and 36,000 tons of sugar.—Aus.-NvZ.
