The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, wlio has been visiting the south on Departmental'matters; returned to Wellington yesterday morning. Capt. Eric N. Webb, son of Mr. S. Webb, of Papanui, who has' been awarded a Military Cross for his services during the Somme battle, is attached to the Engineers in the Australian Imperial Forces, and left Australia in November, 1915. Prior to his joining tho forces he was on, Dr. Mawson's staff' as magnetic observer. Sergt. W. A. Cross, the Church of England clergyman who has been presented in Sydney with the D.C.M., has . revisited Wellington since ho was at Gallipoli. He was ordained a deacon at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral in March, 1912, and was appointed' curate to St. Peter's, when Archdeacon Harper was vicar. He subsequently went to Australia, where he enlisted, as a private. Sergt. Cross is married and lias a family. Mr. G. E. Band, of Sydney, left Wellington on a lour of the South Island on Wednesday evening. The funeral of tlie late Mr. Sydney Carpenter, for several years advertising manager of Thk. Dominion", took place at the Ivarori Cemetery yesterday. Although the interment was of a private nature, many friends of the deceased were presont at the graveside, these including Messrs. C. Earle (Managing Director), A. Sando (Manager), and other heads of The Dominion's departments. Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from tho Directors and staff of The Dominion, Mr. Charles Haines (advertising agent), Sir. A. Blanton (West Australia), and Mr. G. E. Porter (Wellington). Mr. H. M. Skeet, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Auckland district, is at present in Wellington. Mr. S. G. Smith, of New Plymouth, has been nominated by three districts for the seat on the North Island Railway Appeal Board. Mr. Charles Holdsworth, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, has loft on a trip to Honolulu, accompanied by Mrs. Holdsworth and Miss Holdsworth. Mr. C. Webb, Field Inspector at Masterton, has been transferred to Wellington. Ho will be replaced by Mr. T. Bacon (Pahiatua), who in turn will bo succeeded by Mr. W. Ross (Gisborne). Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., of Westport (who has boeu taking the Nelson Magisterial business during the absence of Mr. J. S. Evans on Military Service Board duties), is being transferred to Christcluirch owing to tho establishment of additional Military Service Boards. Mr. and Mrs. T. Taxipo. Mr. A. M'Coy, meat inspector at the Napier abattoir, has received! notice of his transfer to Picton. Captain John Bishop, who died of spinal meningitis at Sling Camp on. January 15, joined the Royal New Zealand Artillery in March, 1898. With tho inception of tho territorial scheme he was transferred to Gisborne, promoted lieutenant 1913, and transferred: to Napier as adjutant, Wellington East. Coast Regiment. After the outbreak of tho war ho was transferred to Palmorston North as group commander, Group 6, Palmerston North, with temporary rank of captain. He went into camp with the Ist and 2nd Battalion Now Zealand Rifle Brigade, Rangiotu, and continued on with tho 3rd and 4th Battalions in tho same position. On February 10, 1916, he sailed -with Colonel Smyth. Prior to sailing he received his captaincy. Since he has bcoii in England he lias been in Sling Camp, Salisbury Plain, as adjutant to the New Zoaland Riflo Brigade. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John. Bishop, Highclitf, Otago Peninsula, and .brother to Staff Sergt.-Major G. S. Bishop, i Defence Office, Gore, and Sergt.-Major J. B. Bishop, N.Z.R.A., Central Battery. Hejleaves a wife and six child rou in Auckland. Mr. "Tom" Sullivan, the well-known oarsman, and one of tie New Zealand prisoners in the internment camp at Ruhleben, will be amongst those to be' released under the agreement regarding the exchange of civilian prisoners in Germany and England. Mr. Sullivan's son is also in. the camp, but as 1 he is below the prescribed age lie will be kept a prisoner until the end of the war. Among the passengers to arrive from London recently was Mr. Charles 'Stoddart, ' a very wellknown English sportsman, who .has visited New Zealand on many occasions for the trout-fishing and deer-stalking seasons. 'On the present occasion Mr. Stoddart intends to try out the head, waters of the Wanganui River about Taumarunui, and will probably go on to Taupo and Rotorua later. Mr. J. D. Wallace, of London, is a visitor to Wellington. The appointment of Monsieur Leon Hippeau as Vice-Consul of Prance at Auckland has been recognised provisionally by the Government. The death occurred, at his residence, Helensville, on Sunday last, of Mr. Francis MacKenzie, who for many years was conneoted with newspaper printing in the Auckland province. Mr. MacKenzie, who was born in London in 1846, arrived at Auckland with his parents in 1863. After working for a time on the "New Zealander," he went to Australia, whero he was for a' time at the goldfields. ' Subsequently ho entered the employ of the Government Printer, at Sydney, returning to Auckland to join the "Southern Cross" newspaper as overseer. After severing his connection with tho latter paper, he founded the "Northern luminary," at ICawakawa, in 1879. Ho relinquished control of his paper a few years ago, and went to Helensville, where he resided until his death.

Mr. C. F. Minnitt, inspector to,the Now Zealand Insurance Company, will leave for England this week, for the purpose of facing his servioos_ at the disposal of the Imperial authorities, to ho used by them in any capacity. Mr. Minnitt has been a member of the company's staff for thirty years, and has held his present high responsibilities for more than (ten years. The company's hoard has granted him leave of absence for the duration of the war. Private cabled advice has been received in Ckristchureli of the death, on January 10, in England, of the Rev. fhomas Flavcll, who was for many years vioar parish, Christchurch. In his younger days, the Rev. Thomas Flavell was for a time associated with the diocese of Nelson. Later, he was appointed vicar of MerivaTe, in succession to Canon. Rnowles, and continued in that position for fourteen years. After leaving Merivale he wont to England, and for some years acted as organising secretary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Upon retiring from that position he was presented by Lord Exmoutli with the living of Christow, in Devonshire, and continued there until about b year ago, when ill-health compelled him to retire. He leaves a, widow and one daughter, wife of the Rev. Arthur Thompson, vicar of Ide, Devonshire, at whose home his death took nlace. Mr. Donald Robertson. Chief. Puhlic Service Commissioner, has returned from a visit to Napier. Mr. D. Ross, chairman of the Waitotara County Council, with CouncillorMorrison and Mr. G. Dixon (County Engineer), are at present visiting Wellington on business connected with the county. Mr. Chapman, sab-accountant in the Tramways and Lighting Departments, has resigned his position in order to take,,up an appointment in Hobart. Mr. Bock, chief cashier, has been appointed to fill the vacancy, and Mr., Taylor, pay clerk, has been promoted to be chief, cashier. An application was made to the City Council for consent to subdivide a. block of land at Ohiro Road, Brooklyn. Tho City Engineer, although there is nothing to prevent the subdivision being carried out, provided- that an unformed street at the side of the property is widened as required by the Public Works, Act, absolutely condemned the proposal, and instanced it as snotber case showing the necessity for the council having power to oontrol subdivisions. The City Council last evening instructed the City Engineer and the City Solicitor to see tlrnt the full requirements of the Act and by-laws are rigidly enforced. Appeals for exemption are to be made by the City Council on behalf of all permanent firemen in the Wellington Brigade who aro drawn in the Military Service Ballot, as in the opinion, of the council the services of these men arc neccssary in the public Wtcrest. As confusion exists in connection with the duplicate name of Princes Street (Wadestown and Newtown), the name of the Wadestown Street, together with that of a short' adjoining street, is to bo renamed Margaret Street. At least a dozen notices are to be orected at suitable _ places on the Qucon's Drive, warning motorists to proceed slowly! At tho City Council last evening it was reported that a request for an extension of tho street-watering. systepi to Crawford and Seatoun Roads could not be acceded to owing to lack of labour and plant.
