Arrived— Mararoa (8.50 a.m.), from Wellington. The delivery of all coal to steamships at Cristobal, Panama Canal, has been consolidated in chargo of tho superintendent of tho now coaling plant. He has the direction of deliveries from cars and from barges equipped with portable couvoyors, serving ships tied up at the commercial dockß, as well as from the coaling plant proper. Orders for coal will continuo to bo placed through tho office of the Captain of the Port, and may bo givon to the boarding officer as soon as the ship reaches port, if not placed by letter or radio in advance of arrival.

THE SYDNEY BOAT. Tho Union Company havo been advised by wireless that the Moeraki, from Sydney, will arrive hero at 7 o'clock this morning. A berth at No. 6 Queen's Wharf has been allotted her.

Messrs. Johnston and Co. adviso that tlioy expect tho Koutunui to arrive in port from Gisborne, via Flat Point, with wool for Wellington. She loads stores and general cargo hero for East Coast bays.

Advice has been received in Wellington that the small steamer Wallsend, which visited Wellington recentlj,' is to make another trip to this port. No word has yet been received of her departure from Melbourne, but she is expected to arrive here about tho end of this week'with a cargo of phosphates.

Messrs. Dalgety and Co. adviso that the Orepuki is now due from Lyttelton on Thursday, and will sail the same day for Nelson, Teraltohc, and Qrcymoufch.

The Ngakuta passed tho beads at 7.30 o'clock last night bound from Greymouth eastwards.

Tho Calm left here last night for Picton, where she will unload cargo to-day, returning to-night to work cargo hero to-morrow.

Tho Greymouth dredgo Mawhera, which; came off tho slip on Saturday morning, leaves Wellington at 4 o'clock this morning for Greymouth.

The Union Company's steamer Wanalta, which has been discharging a cargo of raw sugar at Auckland from Fiji, left the northern port on Saturday for Newcastle. The vessel will load a full cargo of coal at the New South Wales port for Lyttelton and Dunedin. '

The boats are to be ICOft. long, and equipped with 600 h.p. Diesel engines, which will be built at the company's plant."

According to a report of the United States Department of Commerce,, the number of United fitaies-owned ships engaged in foreign tirade on June 30 numbered 3135. Their aggregate gross tonnage was 2,194,470, which is double tho tonnage at the end of the preceding tiscal year. The .net tonnage, reckoned as approximately seven-tenths of tho gross, would bo ahout 1,540.000 tons. The number of American ships passing through the Panama Canal in tho fiscal year ending June 30, 1916, was 238, and their aggregate net Canal tonnage was 737,169. Of these 93 with 350,966 net tons were in the United States coast-wise trade, and 145, With 386.203 net tons, in' tho foreign trade. In the preceding fiscal year a much higher proportion of the American ships passing through the Canal was in the coastwise trade.

A steamer -which lately arrived in New Zealand met with a violent storm off the English coast just after she had quitted port (says the Auckland "Herald"). An hour after she had sailed a warning was issued by ' the British. meteorological authorities that a cyclone wa6 approaching. By that time the vessel had steamed into the disturbed area, and met the full force of the cyclone. For J2 hours she battled against the weather. Seas .swept her fore and aft, washing overboard everything movable, including one boat that;was high up on the boatdeck. Two 'other boats ■were stove in. The deck cabins on one side of the ship were smashed, and rendered useless for The saloon was flooded and materially damaged. In the efforts of the crew to make secure all movable .materials, one sailor had an ankle fractured, another was seriouslE injured internally, and several more received minor injuries. After maintaining its maximnm force for 12 hours—during part of whicV the barometer . stood as low as 27.50—the'cyclone settled down to a strong gale, which lasted for four davs. For thi* remainder of the voyage ordinary weather was encountered.
