As a result of a storm that passed over Winchester on Monday (says the Timaru "Post"), all the oat crops within a radius or two miles from ■Winchester have been literally threshed, and are not worth cutting for threshing purposes, though oaten hay may be made of them. The wheat crops escaped on the whole., Root crops have suffered in some cases, but will recover.
Another evidence of 'die dry season is to be found in the streams that are nearly dried up, says tho "Wyndnam Herald." The Mataura River is lower than it has been for over a quarter of a century. A person might wade across it anvwhere, the depth of water not being "over a foot at many places. It is remarkably clear, too. Many of the small lagoons that are river fed are quite dry, and the fish.in' them have died. Old residents tell us of a time, variously estimated at 28 to 30 years •luSno.ip b puq «3t[.u o3b The Mataura River' then was even lower; and Stewart's Creek, generally considered a never-failing stream, was dry. Tho old v windmill? on JJdendale went wrong, and water' had to be carted to the famished stock, amongst which there was a considerable mortality for want of water. Then, as now, flounders could be seen in the clear waters of the Mataura.
The demand for the famous Victor Cheese Vata still continues, and orders are being executed in rotation. Mr. Factor? Manager, you should certainly get details of the Victor sloping bottom, middle drainage Vat—the Victor means bieaer output and larger dividends. Write or call. A. .T.
