ADMIRAL DEWEY. New York, January le. 'Admiral Dewey is dead.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Admiral Dewey received his lieutenant's commission in tho United State 3 Navy in 1861. In 1898 he was in command of the Asiatic Squadron, and was at Hong-Kong when war broke out between tho United States and Spain. He was sent for, and ordered to "capture or destroy the Spanish fleet" then in Philippine waters. . On May 1 ho overwhelmingly defeated the Spanish fleet, undor Admiral Montojo, in Manila Bay, a victory won without the loss of a man on tho American ships. He • destroyed eleven enemy ships and captured the others, besides all tho land batteries. Ho was then Commodore, but was promoted to Rear-Admiral, and ' later was made Admiral, that title, formerly only borne by_Farragut and Porter, having been revived hy "Act of Congress. Admiral Dewey was born in. 1837.1
