THE WHITE SCOURGE
• CONSUMPTIVES IN HOSPITAL ANNEXES. By Telegraph Special Correspondent. Wanganui, January 17. Tho treatmont of consumptives in separate sanatoria than in buildings attached to tho hospitals in tho Dominion formed the basis of a letter written by tho Minister of Public Health to tho Wanganui Hospital Board. The Minister agreed that for cases that »oro likely to benefit by sanatorium treatment special institutions are necessary, apart from hospitals) but points out that there arc two classes of consumptives for whom accommodation' is required in connection with general hospitals—a case of consumption awaiting admission to a sanatorium and a case of consumption that would not be likely to benefit by treatment in a sanatorium.
"It-is especially with regard to the accommodation of tho above-mentioned classes of consumptive cases that tho Department has advised boards to erect annexes in connection with tho hospitals of tho Dominion," said the Minister, "and I trust that your board will lose no time, in providing such accommodation. I may say that no danger is likely to accrue to other patients from the treatment of consumptive patients in special annexes, and it can confidently be said that though this practico of accommodating consumptives in connection with our general hospitals has been followed out for some years, there has been no suggestion to the effect, that infection has been carried by this means.
