APPRENTICES AND NEW AGREEMENTS
CASE AT WANGANUI. By Telegraph Special Correspondent. - Wanganui, January 17. A case of some interest to employers and apprentices was lieard in the Magistrate's 'Court to-day, when the Inspector of Awards proceeded against Paid Chapman for a breach of the Engineers' Award. It was alleged that the defendant had been apprenticed to Allen Brothers as a fitter, and that he had left their service before the time of his apprenticeship had expired. ' For the defence it was contended that the agreement of service was merely a verbal one, and that an apprenticeship must he evidenced by a written, deed, counsel therefore held that the defendant had committed no breach of the award.
The inspector said that if this contention were upheld it would affect nearly every apprentice in the- Dominion. Ho would therefore ask His Worship to state a case for the Arbitration Court.
The defendant raised a further defence that he had left his employment with the sanction of one of the partners of the firm. Further hearing of the case was adjourned to enable the mspeotor to bring evidence to meet the points raised.
