HUTT AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. Mr. H. Baldwin (Mayor) presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hufct Borough Council last evening. It was decided to accedo to a request from Mrs. Yeats (lion, secretary, of the Patriotic Shop Committeo) for tho council's assistance in tho removal' of rofuso from tho shop premises on Saturday mornings. The' I'otono Borough Council asked for support to resolutions asking the Government to increase soldiers' pa,y r to 10s. per day, to take immediate stops for the conscription .of wealth and to utilise sudi wealth for tho benefit of tho men serving and their dependants. Iti his report, the BorouglifEngineoT stated that two dressing sheds had been practically comploted at a total cost of £30 ss. 10d. Tho cycle track in Waterloo Road had been formed and tarred, and was looking well. Five connections had been made with tho gas mains and ono with the water mains, making tho total number of connections! to dato 605 and 1037 respectively. The total expenditure on works, etc., for the four weeks ending January 6 had been £394 12s. _sd. The report from the pumping station was that tiicro had been a. great demand for water during tho month, and 634 hours ovortimo had had to bo worked'.
It was reported that 36 gas consumers had had alterations and repairs made to their fittings during tho month. Seventy-nine consumers had had 408 burners attended to tinder tho gas consumers' maintenance scheme. A debit noto for £361 18s., being tho amended estimate of tho council's proportion of cost of maintenance of Hutt Road for 1916-17, was passed for payment. .
