BOWLING CARNIVAL

e . THIRD DAY OF THE RINKS 1: 1 SOME FINE PLAY \ r. The section play in the Champion- s ship Itinks was concluded on Saturday o evening,' as per programme, and now j the play fines down to-day and to- I morrow to finding tho best of those 1 rinks that remain in the contest. To facilitate this all links who won as many games as tho ' lowest section- \ winner is included in the finals, so that 2 all winners of six out of the nine 1 games played on Thursday, Friday, ' and Saturday will be pitted against one another in a second tournament to commonco this morning. Though the sky was overcast and the northerly wind was inclinsd to be 1 gusty on occasions on Saturday, it was c very good bowling weather. The brisk northerly was somewhat disconcerting on some'of the keener greens, but on the whole howlers had little to find fault with in the prevailing conditions. 1 There are some fine individual greens < in other towns, but there is a consen- J sus of opinion among regular touma- J ment players that the average of tho ■ Wellington and suburban greens is the highest in tho history of tournaments. . None of the greens used in tho Cham- ; pionship Rinks are really bad, and ', there are half a dozen really first-class j greens that only confirmed growlers ; . disgruntled oyer losses could pronounce to' be anything else. A pleasing feature of the tournament has been the very admirable manner in which the players have been 1 catered for at luncheon and afternoon ! tea on the various greons. It would I be invidious to particularise, but on i every green the bowlers' wives and '■ daughters havo worked steadily and most cheerfully day after day, and each i luncheon and afternoon tea has been | presented in a most attractive manner. ■ THE RESULTS. Hemingway, Porteous a bye. j In the above draw each rink in a 6ec- ] tion plays every other rink except in j section I\, -where- each rink will play ( three games. j NOTES. ' One of the most attractive games to witness on Saturday was that between ( Walker (Ponsonby) and Laughtou , (Newtown). Both rinks were in ex- .] cellent form, but in dead drawing the j Newtown men were more consistently j accurate. Duff, three for Laughton, ] was in brilliant form, and was ; drawing to inches all through, and , Davies was steadily precise. Laugh- • ton himself was drawing soundly. . and built his heads with brains. Time , after time Walker's men were called j upon to run-out or drive, and "Walker, , who is not drawing so well as he used ■ to, drove frequently with superb accuracy. Tho two Caseys -also played ; soundly. Laughton had another tough fight with Hendry (Hutt). "I'm afraid the indiscretions of the , evening are not conductive to good bowling the nest morning," said a prominent "Wellington howler on Saturday morning. ' Though handicapped by illness on the first day of the rink play, the Palmerston North rink (skipped by J. A. Nash) has played consistently good bowls throughout, and through Ms defeat of Eaugsford the strong "West End skip, in tho ninth round on Saturday, will bo concerned in the final games to commence to-day. By his win, Nash brought into the finals all winners of six out of tho nine games. TO-DAY'S PLAY. Play will this morning on tho Victoria, Wellington, and Hataifcai greens at 9 o'clock, and at Nowtown at 5.30. In section play-off in the pairs the following games will commence on tho Wellington greon at 2 p.m. to-day:— Foster plays Bentloy; Casey plays Ferguson: Crawford (Nelson) plays Leith.
