TEACHERS' INSTITUTE

CONFERENCE ENDED. Tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute was concluded on Saturday. Mr. Combs (Masterron) eubmitted the following remit:—"That the executive for any one year go out of. office at tho cud of that yoar, and that their successors be both nominated and olected at tho conference. The motion was carried. Tho Auckland Branch sent forward the following proposal, which was agreed to: "That the time has now arrived -when compulsory membership of the institute be a condition of permanent employment by education boards." , It was agreed, on the recommendation of the North Canterbury Branch: 'That tho Department be' asked to institute a. Kindergarten Department in all the large city anil suburban, infant schools:" Another remit (from Otago) was adopted as follows: "That, there should be attached to each city school a department suitably equipped and furnished for the needs of sub-normal and backward children, where they may receive training suitable to tlieir developments, under a specially drained tencher/" It was resolved: "TKat -mpmbers of the N.Z.E.I. who have joined the Expeditionary Forces should bo relieved from payment of subscriptions for such period as circumstances may warrant."' A report was presented by a South Island Committee of the Institute on the frniningr of teachers, but the conference did not deal finally with tho report, which made very important recommendations. ■ The matter 6tands TPforretl to the institute's branches for consideration. The conference concluded after the usual complimentary Totes to the officers of the institute and to the Press.
