NOTES AND COMMENTS
.'Br Glencob.l ' Entries for the Egmont Eaciug Club's Summer Meeting close to-night. The Jubilee Meeting of the Westlaad Racing Club will be opened to-day, and will conclude to-morroiv. After his meritorious win in the Manawatu Cup, it was fully expected that Square Deal would run prominently at Jlavton, but ho failed badly on. each day, : and probably the race at Awapuni on , the hard track got to the bottom of him. ■ Ho is nicely placed in tlio Wellington Cup with Bst. iilb., and as ho will have plenty of time to freshen up before that race he can be depended upon to take his place in tho field. Client, 7st. 81b., is well enough handicapped in the Wellington Cup to have a chance. At Awapuni and Afarton. ho showed good form, and though his successes were gained over a ten-furlongs course he finished so well as to give the impression that another quarter of : a mile would not come amiss to him. The two victories of Menelaus at Ellerslie seem to have impressed Handicapper H. Coyle, as he has set the brother to Nones to meet his stable companion Chakwana at a difference of 51b. In the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie there was 251b. ' between the pair, and the mare won. It is very evident that the younger horse did not show his best form in. that race,, as in both his nest starts he won by several lengths in very fast time. Immediately on the appearance of the [ weights for the Wellington Cup a rush set in for Bunting, and the All Blackgelding is now a good favourite for the mile and a half. He will certainly have to improve on his public form to win such an important handicap as the Wellington Cup, but it is very evident that he is expected , to nuake the necessary improvement. He will be ridden by A. Reed, who won the same race last year on Bee. This will mean that a fresh horseman will have to be secured for John Barleycorn, and probably W. Bell will be offered the mount. Bjorneborg ran well enough in the handicap events at Ellerslie to suggest that ho will be Mr. T. H. Lowry's representative in tho Wellington Cup. Probably Egypt will be reserved for ono of tho big handicaps on the second or third days. Some of those present at Ellerslie state that Chortle pulled very hard in his races, and his rider was Tinable to get him to settle down. It seems that unless the Multifid gelding is hemmed in behind the leaders with no prospect of getting a run he will not go quietly in the first part of liis races. Ardenvhor failed badly in the Auckland Cupj and seemed to be in a sour mood. Howover, in the Eacing Club Handicap on January 1 ho raa a good race, and after being in the leading division the whole way lie finished third. Tho New Zealand Cup winner seems to run his best races in front. L. H. Hewitt displayed a very pleasing trait in 'his character whilst in Dun- ■ edin for the Dunedin Jockey Club's i Meeting, writes "Sentinel," in tho •. "Otago Witness." It was his first stay j here for several years past, and he took the opportunity to place a handsome wreath on the grave of his old school- , master, tho late Mr. Harry Goodman, ' to whom he gives credit for thoroughly / grounding him in the art of horsemanship.
