NOTES AND COMMENTS

IST GI.ENCOE.I . Entries' for tho. Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup and Doneueter Handicap ami Sydney Cup closo on Tuesday next. . ■ ... . . . ■ The V.11.C. has passed on the Federal Government's entertainment tax to the public, and it now costs lljd. more to get on to tho lawn at Vlcmington and Id. to sco tho races from tlie Hill. Amongst those who .were present at the Ellorslie Meeting there in a wide divergence of opinion as to the merits of the two leading three-year-olds. The Toll' and Sasanbf. in tho Derby, Kebel led into the straight from tho pnir, a nil whereas Tho Toff got up on tho fenco Sasanof ■had to go out wide, and lost fully four lengths. He then ran up to The Toff at tho distance, and in a vory closo finish just won, though inivny peoplo thought that a dead heat would have been a good decision. In the Plate the pair finished on the outside of the course, with Tho Toff on tho outside, and ho lecurod the judge's eyo with a neck to spare. Ho was having his fourth race at the meeting, yet he saddled up wonderfully well. Sasanof also stripped 'well, but did not bear tho full appearance that The Toff did and ovidontly tho latter is a great feeder. Tho pair are now to go into retirement, and will not race again until the autumn. John Barleycorn is to fulfil hie engagement in the Wellington Cup, nnd will again bo ridden by A. Keed. Tho Sarto gelding arrives from Auckland this morning, and will go on to Trontham. He will bo quartered at J. Lowo's stables. His trainer, C. Christie, goes south tonight, but will return almost immediately. John 'Barleycorn raced each day at Ellerslie, and stood up to it well. His owner, Mr. W. Gardiner, • who went south ln«t night, thinks he stripped better on the concluding dny of the meeting than over ho did previously. The Sarto gelding got a very bnd passage in the Grandstand Handicap, and was nearly down ' once. The New Zealand Cup winner, Ardenvhor, raced without success at Ellerslie. He is being taken home to Wingntui, but will return for the Wellington Cup Meeting. Mr. A. Alexander, owner of Bisogne, was very doubtful about the wisdom of starting the chestnut in the Royal Stakes on Tuesday, and he had decided to put tho pen through his name, but after inspecting the going subsequent to the first , event ho decided to allow tho Railway Handicap winner to tako lue place in tho field, with the result that he made an exhibition of the two-year-olds. While racing in tho Bailway Handicap at Ellei'slie, Taltcrley broke down, and probably tho last has been 6eenot' him' on the racecourse. Some months back Mr. W. J. Kalph gave 350 guineas for the Birkenhead gelding, and won a raco with him at Ellerslie in November, so ho is not likely to be much out over tho purchase. On the oponing day of the December Meeting at Kandwick. tho handsome four-year-old, Wallace lsingluss, won his first raco for fifteen months. This was tho Grandstand Stakes, a woight-for-age o v ,e"t of nine furlongs. Subsequently the Wahaco horso filled second place in the Summer Cup, which was won by Tho Fortune Hunter. The German Breeders' and Ownors' Society was recently endeavouring to providethreodaye' extra racing for the benefit, first, of the poor of Berlin; secondly, for the relatives of tho fallen in battle; and, thirdly, for the blinded and crippled soldiers. Owners weru to pay bigger ontranco fees, with forfeits on a higher scale, and also to give tho stakes won to such worthy funds. It was also suggested that tho German public would gladly submit to an additional reduction from the totalisator. After her success on the opening day at Tuiihereiiilvuu, (here was a rumour abroad that a Wellington spot tsman had purchased Lady General. As the mare \von again on tho second dny it. was a lucky deal if it eventuated. Proprietary clubs using the totalisator in Now South Wales will have to hand over to the Colonial Treasurer all fractions of dividends, as well as dividends unclaimed a month after the decision of a race. Star Shoot (Isinglass—Astrology) was an easy first in the winning sires' list in America up to November 17, his total being «£2<I,SSG. He was represented by SG performers, and starting in 1172 races, they won 190. Second on tho list was the doad Peep o' Day (Ayrshire—Sundown), with .fcIS.UG, the result of 1« wins by β-j representatives; while after heading the list for the three previous years Broomstick had dropped to ninth. Tho "Thoroughbred Kccord" (t/exington) contains some interesting figures in connection with this year's racing in the State of Kentucky. The amount distributed in prize money was .£134,000, over 109 days. Aβ there were 718 races, the average per race was just short of i>lßo. Latonift gave away slightly over ,£32,000

; for 2-1 days' racing, and at tho Kentucky . fixtures tho most successful owner was . ,T. W. Schorr, with .65935, hie horses . winning 22 races.
