HAWKE'S BAY RIVERS IN FLOOD

SERIOUS DAMAGE THREATENED. By Telegraph—Press Association. , , Napier, January 3. Following exceptionally heavy and almost continuous rain which has fallen since Monday night, the rivers are in flood, and unless the bad weather soon abates.serious damage is threatened. Fortunately the mouths of the rivers wero free from bars, but on account of tho unprecedented amount of water running, the rivers are unable to cope with the heavy volume. ,' With the crops still ungarncred, the devastating result of an- inundation can bo easily imagined. Hastings reports that tho rivers are rising rapidly, and if the rise continues much longer all the low-lying country will certainly be flooded. In some parts of the country a good ileal of hay is still out, and there seems little prospect of saving it. '
