TO SHEAR OR FIGHT?
A PRONOUNCEMENT SOUGHT.
At yesterday's sitting of tho Wellington Military Service Board, the shearers' secretary (Mr. Grayndkr). asked for a definite statement concerning the position of shearers. As labour was scarce and'wool was deemed to be-an indispensable commodity, ho suggested that the board should declare all shearers to be free from military service. Hβ thought- the exemption should apply to men of two years' standing as shearers. Shearers had answered the call very, freely, here and in Australia 20,000 were said to have enlisted.
Tho chairman of tho board, Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., said the Wellington Board had no power to make a general pronouncement Which would' cover other boards.. Every case would have to be dealt with on its merits.
