j , INCREASED HEWING KATES.'' Considerable increase in hewing rates are the principal feature of the order made by Mi. Justice Edmunds in settling the recent Australian dispute between ; the colliery owners and Die mmera. The order is as follow,?:— (1) This order shall, unless rescinded or varied by me, remain in force for a period of three years and eueh further . time, if any, as the present European war may continue, and industrial peace shall be pr'eservedjtt the coal and shale mining industry Th the Commonwealth during that period. (2) No employer or employee and no combination, association, or union of em- ; ployers or employees shall do any act or thing destroying or tending to destroy the peace of tho industry within the period mentioned. (3) The hewing rate for minors antl all , customary rates paid to them shall bo ' increased 15 per cent, up on the existing: rates. (i) The existing rates of pay for all hand labour, including boys, excepting < the deputies in tho coal mines of New South .Wales and Victoria, shall be in- : creased by 20 per cent. (5) The rates of pay to locomotive and winding engine-drivers shall, excepting tho State of Queensland, be Us. per day, and tho existing rates paid to enginedrivers, pumpers, motor- and sub-station attendants, firemen, trimmers, greasers, and boiler cleaners'-shall be increased by 15 per cent. In the State of Queensland the rates shall be so fixed that the • wages paid for corresponding periods - worked shall be not less than those herein ] ordered. (G) For all overtime except as otherwise provided payment shall be made at the rate of time and a quarter for tho ' first two hours and time and a half ; thereafter. For all time- on duty on Sundays and holidays, except as otherwise i provided, payment shall be made at tho rato of time and' a half. Exceptions:— In the enso of employees required in cases of actual necessity caused by fire, inrush of water, falls or other like emergency, and of horsokeepors, furnacemen, and of employees who agree to workdouble time for their own benefit, the rates of pay for overtimo and for all timo' worked on Sunday and holidays , shall be at tho rate of ordinary time. : (7) Tho overtime rates herein.contained shall be read into No. 1 order as a part ' thereof. . , . , „ (8) For engine-drivers and firemon, , pumpers, motor and sub-station attendants special existing customs and conditions as to hours of work and overtime shall romain as prior to this order. (!)) In all collieries which wind or haul coal on singlo shift, day labour employees (except deputies), employed from face to wagon, and surface men employed on the surface loading material in the colliery yard for underground on afternoon or night shift shall bo paid 7\ per cent, extra on tho higher ra,to for day work. Whoro a higher percentage is paid such higher rate shall be mam- ' taineil whilst oxisting conditions continue. Howiii.? rate as at present paid on afternoon and night shift shall con- ■ tinue.
