The death of an old colonist in the person of Mr. George May, of Balcairn, occurred last week. The late Mr. May was born in Bristol, England, in 1830. As a youth he served in the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean during Garibaldi's war, and afterwards joined a Chilian niau-of-war, and: was present at some engagements between the Chilian and Peruvian troops, • After residing about six years in the United States, of America, Mr. May came to Lyttelton in the, ship Sebastopol in 1861, and settled in.the Balcairn district, where he had since resided."

News has been received oE the deatli of Mr. Francis Chapmah, at his residence, "Stratheden," Coventry' Park, Streatbara. London, S.W., on December 11. Mr. Chapman was the founder of the firm of Francis Chapman, Sons, and Deekes, of Hopetoun House, Lloyds Avenue, London, E.C., and Castloreagh House, Castlereagh Street, Sydney. Up till recently Mr. Chapman was able to take an active part in the management of the business, but latterly resigned through illness, and had to undergo a serious operation, which unfortunately terminated fatally. He leaves a widow, two sons, and two daughters. ,
