OTAGO APPEALS
POSITION OF DENTAL STUDENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Duncdin, December 29. The Otago military Service Board sat in Dunedin to-day. Dr. Pickorell, Dean of the Dental Faculty, appealed on behalf of Cecil HalcnTait, dental student. The ltev. Dr. Cameron, Chancellor of the University, obtained leave to appeal in place of Lieut. I'ickorell, who is on active service. The latter, in a letter, said that 100 dentists from New Zoaland had left on active service. It was mentioned that Surgeon-General Henderson had addressed medical and dental students at the beginning of the session, and given.theni to understand that they were doing their duty by completing their course. The appeal was adjourned till.January 8, to enable:appellant to be medically examined.. The board also desired further information as to the condition of tlie dental profession in Puhcdin. An appeal by , the employer of Ernest Hopewell, slaughterman, was dismissed. ■ -•■-- An appeal by the Union Company oil behalf of Albert Wheeler, inspector and staff superintendent, was adjourned till January 8. The following appeals on account of undue hardship either to or their parents were dismissed:— Lawrence Stewart Rankin (machinist'). Llewelyn Stanley Milburn (painter), Albert Edward Power and James Laird Dysdale. (clerk), Ernest Sainsbury (dairy farmer), who also appealed on account of public interest, Jas. Stewart Haukin (tramway .employee). James M'Phcrson Fleming appealed for temporary exemption to enable him to complete the term of his apprenticeship, and was granted an assurance that he would not bo called up before February 2. .- .Horace Franklin Kitt appealed for im extension of time .to enable him to make business arrangements. The appeal was dismissed, appellant being informed that ho would have a month. The appeal of Percy Charles Nicol (colmrmaker) on the ground of occupation, was dismissed, appellant not to
bo called up till March 1. His employers also appealed for him'.An appeal by John M'Kewan was adjourned so that appellant could be medically examined, and the same courso was taken with Clias. Frederick Aiming (bootmaker) and Daniel Edward Moffatt. ' An appeal by Alexander Mathieson Sanderson (cattle dealer) for an extension of time was dismissed. Wm. Francis Dougherty asked for a transfer from the First Division to tho Second Division. Tho chairman said tho Court had no such power. Tho appeal was dismissed", appellant not to be called up till February. The appeals of Frank Richard Mowbray (student), Jas, Dunlop Carnahan (labourer) John Higgins (range--1 fitter), Jas. Campbell Ireland (ceiling fixer), none of "whom appeared, were formally dismissed. , Tho appeals of William Jas, Hailey, John Edward Wnight, and Salvevt Gordon Anderson wore withdrawn.
