COST OF GOVERNORS
WHAT THE AUSTRALIAN STATES PAY. At the Premiers' Conference, in Melbourne the question of, abolishing State Governors' was revived. If it were possible to dispense with all State Governors and their, establishments absolutely, and to provide for the carrying out of tlieir functions by Chief Justices acting as Lieutenant-Governors, Australia would eavo about ,£36,531 per anuom. The upkeep of all Vice-Regal establishments in the Commonwealth costs .£71,139 annually. Included in that sum are tlio salaries of the Governor-General and tlio six State Governors, the official staff of each, the repairs and maintenance to Governors' residences, and certain miscellaneous charges. Of'the £71,000, the GovernorG'eneral's establishment costs .£34,605, made up of the Governor-General's salary, ,£10,000; official secretary, JC6SO; Governor's establishment, '.£5572; and miscellaneous, cost of the Governor to New South Wales is .£12,910 annually. Sir Gerald Strickland draws a salary of .£5000; the official secretary is paid .£100; the establishment costs .£1612; repairs and maintenance to Government House (1914-15), £4845; and other expenditure grouped under the hoad of miscellaneous, absorbed £105#. , The figures for the other States arc:— Victoria: Governor's salary, other charges *24354; total, .£9354. Queensland: Governor's salary, £2555, other charges .£4520; total, .£7375. Australia: Governor's salary, .£5000; other charges, «£1498; total, .£6496. West Australia: Governor's salary, £4000; other charges, .£2500; total, .£6500. Tasmania: Governor's salary, <£2750; other charges, £1008; total, £3758.
