MAGISTRATE'S COURT

DISLOYAL UTTERANCE ALLEGED. Messrs. W. H. Hennah and D. Keir, J.P.'s, presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Harriet Maloney, for being an idle and disorderly person, habitually consorting with reputed prostitutes, ivaa sentenced to three months' imprisonment. James Patrick Mooney was convicted of helpless drunkenness, and ordered to pay medical expenses. Mtzgorald Clark and James O'Meara appeared on remand on a charge of a breach of the peace. A further remand for on© week was granted at the request of Clarkj who stated that lie had been -unable to obtain the services of the solicitor he desired, but would be able to secure them shortly. "William Joseph Cotter was further remanded till to-day 011 a charge of being by night, without lawful excuse, in the Government House grounds. Charles Henderson appeared on remand on a. charge of causing grievous bodily harm to Constable William Fitzgerald. Tho police applied for a further remand, which was granted. In view o£ the fact that Fitzgerald's condition is now not dangerous, bail was fixed at the reduced figure of £50, with one surety of £50. ' Maurice Hope, who. said he was a married man with, three young children, was charged with having published, at "Wellington 011 December 8, a statement indicating disloyalty in respect of the present war. Ho was alleged to have said: "To with the King and country. I would not fight for, anyone. I have no time for men wear-; ing rod bands on their arm. They aro fools." The accused, in applying , for bail, said that he had three times tried to enlist, but had been rejected. Detec-tive-Sergeant Cos opposed tbo application. Ho said that the accused hail made the alleged statement in an hotel in the presence of several returned soldiers, and, after striking one who romonstrated with him, had got away in tho crowd. At the time he was wearing an anti-conscription badge—a blue badge with "No" in white upon it. Their Worships expressed the opinion that sinco tho offoncowaa alleged' to have been committed in an hotel it might havo been due to drink. Bail was allowed in the sum of £50, with one .surety of £50. _ Edgar Thomas Holmes was remanded to January 4 on a charge of failing to provide his wife with adequate maintenance.
