UNDERWATER PIRACY
GERMANY'S NEW SUBMARINES (Rcc. December 26, 7.20 p.m.) Amsterdam, December 25. German shipyards aro working day and uiglifc constructing an enormous fleet of submarines. Tho only limit to tho number is the great difficulty in securing adequately trained crews. The chief training ccntro is Kiel Harbour, where thirty of the newest and largest submarines arc daily used solely for tho purpose of training crews. A feature of tho new vessels is the extraordinarily shaped bows, which resemble a blade seytho |x>inting. up. wards out of tho water. A newly invented process makes tho blade extremely hard and sharp, in order that a submarine travelling at a moderate speed may be able to cut through a wire hawser 1J inches thick. The larger submarines are equipped for a voyage of seventy days. At the launching of a submarine from the Germania Wharf recently tho vessel glicfed off tho slips at an Increasing speed, and when it was impossible to check the submarine the horrified spectators saw a_ big iron implement lying across the slips. Tho vessel struck tho obstaclo, bounded up, and fell upside down in tho water. Twclvo were drowned. All Gormany is ringing wTHi the coming exploits of the submarine fleet, and there are signs of renewed cheerfulness. —Aus.-N.Z.. Cable Assn.
