ALLEGED SEDITIOUS UTTERANCES

TWO WATERSIDE -WORKERS CHARGED. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Messrs. W. IL Hannah and J. W. Ellison, J.IVs, Peter Eraser, a waterside worker, and organising secretary of the Social Democratic Party, and Thomas Brindle, also a waterside worker and a former president of tho Social Democratio Party, appeared on charges of having published seditious utterances in speeches delivered at Alexandra Hall on December ]Q. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. Pi S..K. Macassey, applied for a remand till today in each case, and this was granted. Mr. P. J. O'Regan's application for bail for each defendant was strenuously opposed by Mr. Macassey, and was refused by the Bench. Mr. O'Regan: In that case, Your Worship, I beg to withdraw iicm both cases. What was apparently a demonstration of approval on the part of workers assembled in the auditorium was promptly checked by an order for silence. The arrest of Fraser, who resides at 145 The Terrace, Wellington, was effected at 7.5 p.m. on Wednesday by Detec-tive-Sergeant_Cox"and Detectives Mason and Carney, in the vicinity of tho Alexandra Hall, where a conference is being held of the various union delegates throughout New Zealand. Brindle, who lives at 346 Tinakori Road, paid a visit to the police station yesterday morning to see his comrade, Fraser, and was there arrested by Detective-Sergeant Cox on a charge similar to that on, which Fraser was detained. William M'Manus, a middle-aged man, was charged to-day with seditious utterances, and was remanded, hail being allowed in the sum of £600. S THORN REMANDED. By Telegraph—Pres3 Association. Auckland 1 , December 21. James Thorn, of the "Maori land Worker,'J appeared at the Police Court on a sedition charge, and was remanded till to-morrow. The Crcnn Prosecutor opposed bail, and the Justices of tho Peace who were on the bench declined to grant it. Later they agreed to confer with Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., who reserved his decision pending consultation with' his brother Magistrates.
