SOUTHERN APPEALS

Dunedin, December 20. The Otago Military Servico Board sat at Dunedin to-day. William Cooper, telegraphist, appealed on tho ground that he was ovor age, being bom in -1868. Tho appeal was allowed.

Joseph Andrew Dysart, railway porter, appealed on the ground of undue hardship owing to family circumstances. The appeal was dismissed. James Alexander Walquist, asphalting contractor, appealed on the ground that his enlistment would be contrary to the public interest because of his occupation, and would cause undue hardship. Appeal dismissed, appellant not to be called up till February 20. Ernest Hey, plumber, appealed on the ground that he had contracted to carry on the business of another man, who went away with the Twentieth Reinforcements. Joseph Hey, accountant,- appealed on the ground that he was the sole support of his mother and the partial support of two sisters, and that his services were required by the Standard Insurance Co. Each appellant was allowed one month in which to arrange his affairs.

Dr. Will, Medical Superintendent of the Ashburn Hall Mental Hospital, appealed against the enlistment of Harry Hamilton, engineer attendant, on the ground that all the old attendants had enlisted, and appellant was tho only one left, who had experience of tho work. Hie evidence disclosed that the man. was already in camp, and the Chairman said the case was not mot by any Act or regulation. The appeal was allowed.',

Harold Handforth, bootmaker, appealed on the ground that he was an only son, and his mother did not enjoy good health. The case -was adjourned until January, tho appellant to bp medically examined in the meantime.

■William Jones, farmer and contractor of Brighton, appealed en the ground that he was farming o.i Crownlands, and had contracted to deliver flax, coal, and hemp. He also appealed onreligious grounds. James Jones, of Brighton, foreman of fiaxmill, appealed* on the ground that it was impossible to get a competent man to take chargo of the fiaxmill. Ho also appealed on religious grounds. Both appellants helong to the "Brethren." The appeals were dismised, but William v ill "not bo called up before January 20. Jonah Dysart, railway employee, appealed on tho ground that .he was tho support of his widowed mother, a sister, and a widowed sister with throe children. Ho also urged financial reasons. Tho appeal was dismissed. Robert Johnson, auctioneer, appealed on tho ground that ha was the solo support of his widowed mother. His brother was now' in Trentham Camp. The case was adjourned for cne mouth. Francis Fitzpatrick, carpenter, appealed on the ground of medical unfitness. The appeal was allowed, the appellant to take his chance in'the ballot. Patrick Fitzpatrick appealed on the ground tliat he was the support of his widowed mother, who is partially paralysed. Tho appeal was dismissed, and tho appeal by a third brother, Joseph Fitzpatrick, coal man, on similar grounds was also dismissed. The_ appeal by William Coopor.i telegraphist, that he was not a reservist, beinc 47 years of age, was allowed. William Boraman was allowed until January 20 to enablo him to sit' for tho teachers' examination.

An appeal by William Stovcnson, cabinetmaker, on the ground that be was over the age, was allowed; Charles Chisholm, boot repairer, of Sawyer's Bav, appealed on the ground that if ho enlisted four employees would be oflt of-employment. The appeal was dismissed, Chisholm being, allowed a month to fix up his affairs. The appeal by Neil M'Domild, on the ground that he was in the Second Division, was allowed.

•Robert Henderson, carpenter, appealed on the ground that he did rot come under Section 35. Ho had two single brothers, one of whom had t*en rejected. James Henderson, encineer. anpealed on general grounds, but said that he was willing to servo as a mimi■G6n worker. Both anneals were allowed. • The appeal by James Rnimmond, a cook, on the ground of permanent unfitness, was allowed. Peter Drummond, stonemason, appealed on general grounds, and said- that ho was temporarily unfit. The appeal wis allowed. Horace Hargood, flmirmill hand, appealed on the ground that he was nn onlv son. and had a wife' and an invalid mother to support. The Vase was adjourned for "no month, the Appellant, to be medically examined in the lneantim».

The Military Service Board continued its sittings to-day. Wm. Thos. Hobbs, dairy farmer, Now Brighton, appealed on the grounds of hardship, and that his calling up was contrary to tho public interest. Tho case was adjourned, sine die. ... Henry Walter Samuels, law clerk, Papanui,'appealed on the grounds that ho did not come under Section 35, and also that his calling up would be contrary to tho public interest. Undue hardship was also alleged. The appeal was allowed, the chairman stating that if called up by the ballot the reasons for the present exemption, which were financial obligations, would not bo considered. John William Samuels, painter, Papanui, withdrew his appeal, and Georgo Arthur Samuels was granted exemption, he being tho sole support of a mother and sister.

Reginald Cdrticld Jaggar, piano tuner, Christchurch, who was married on May 19, 1915, and had two children, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed, but appellant was allowed three mouths to make arrangements. Ernest Johu Berry, grocer, Sydenham appealed on the ground of lindno hardship. His partner was at the front and Ills brother, who was assisting with the business, had broken ■ down in health, and if appellant was called up tho business would have to be sold. The appeal was adjourned for three months to enable evidence to- be adduced about the brother. Marshall Henrv Robinson, butcher, Sumner, appealed on grounds of undue hardship. He was in business with his brother, who had been rejected. •Tli" appeal was dismissed. ■ ' The appeal of Ernest George Allan, seaman, Lyttelton, on the grounds that his calling up would be contrary to public interest, was adjourned till next month. Stephen Henry Mildren, contract ploughman; Richard Henry Mildren, cartage contractor: and Georgo Henrv Mildren, carter, of Opawa. appealed against being called up under Section 35. SITTING AT HAMILTON • Hamilton, December 20. Tho Military Service Board sat at Hamilton to-day, when 25 appeals wero down for hearing. John Cummack Collier, aged 35, objected to Mb calling up on the grounds that his enlistment would be contrary to the public interest,' and also because of family circum-' stances. The appeal was granted on the former grounds. Arthur Holland, aged 21, mine trucker, appealed on similar grounds, and tho appeal was adjourned for further evidence as to appellant's indispensability to the industry. J. Peterson produced certificates as to his complete physical unfitness and his appeal was granted.
