DUKE OF CONNAUGHT APPOINTED
COLONEL-IN-CHIEF,

James' Allen (Minister of Defence)' has received the following telegram from Hik Excellency the Governor:—"As honorary colonel of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, His Excellency the Governor has.Teceived a telegram notifying h'iin of the fact that, with the approval of His Majesty the Ivuig, His Royal Highness the Duke of Cohnaught and Strathearn has been graciously, pleased to assume the appointment : of colonel-in-chief of the New Zealand Brigade." j His Excellency has dispatched the following telegram to His Royal Highness :f-"On bohalf of all ranks of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, I .desire to tender to Your Royal Highness our respectful.congratulations on" your assumption pf'tho appointment of colonel-: in-chief of the regiment, and at the satae ;time do assure,you of cur high appreciation of the honour which you have conferred on us. (Sighed) Liverpool, honorary colonel, N.Z. Rifle Briaiade." • '■ -. ' :
The Minister stated' that Bis Excellency had also advised hira that he had: sent a telegram to the brigadier-general commanding the regiment in .the field conveying to him the text of the above telegrams. ■ • .
"I am sure it -will be Very <yxstifv.irig to New Zealand," added Mi\ Alien, "that' His Royal Highness the Cutis of Coruiauglit lias graciously assumed the appointment of colonel-ih-cliief of the Riflb Brigade. I have no doubt it will stimulate the Rifle Brigade to add honours to those they have won already."
