A FALSE DECLARATION

UNDER MILITARY SERVICE ACT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hamilton, December 18. The first prosecution for making a false declaration under the Military Service 'Act was heard by Mr. Rawson, S.M., to-day. It was one in which a young man who has been cohabiting with a woman declared himself in the National Registration return to be a married man with one chikl Defendant pleaded guilty. He said his object jn falsely declaring that ho was married was to protect the woman with whom he was living. ■ He had no desire to shirk, as in any case he was ineligible owing to blindness in one eye. The Magistrate said the Legislature regarded the offence in a very serious light, and had he thought the defendant had deliberately committed tho act in order to avoid liability for service, would have sent him to gaol without the option of a fine. He felt inclined, however, to beliove the story, and inflicted a fine of £5, with costs.
