WAR WASTE
■ Sir, —1 am informed that the-waste going ou in Featherston Camp, and, I presume, in' Trentham Camp also, is simply scandalous. My informant says two pig dealers pay £50 per month each for the waste food in Featherston Gamp. This huge sum is a guide as to the amount of waste they must receive, for. their money.. Hot joints of meat' are placed on the tables each day, and very often three or four slices only are cut from the joint, when it is consigned to the pig-tubs. , My informant, a soldier, who' has hecn in camp for four months, say'a" if those joints were again placed on the tables at' tea-time, they would be eaten with relish by the men. After a hard : morning's work,, the steaming hot-joint does not appeal to the men at dinner-time, but if served ,up cold at tea-time would be greatly appreciated. Butter never goes on the table a second time, and the waste; is simply appalling. . While the Ministers are preaching economy, «uroly such terrible waste as' this should be looked into by themselves. —I am, etc.,
[Tho contents of this letter wore referred to the Defence Minister (the Hon. J. Allen). Mr.' Allen said that similar statements had been made hefore, and the subject of waste at. the camps had been investigated several times. Those inquiries had satisfied'] him that although there was unavoidable waste, it was reduced to a minimum, and that constant efforts were made to prevent it. Everything was carefully watched and chcclced.]
