Both he and Corpl. G. 1!. Lennard, sub-editor, are kept busy, and Mi\ C. Mackenzie finds his time for visiting hospitals sadly curtailed by the calls oF the "Chronicles." _ Jrr. J. W. Raymond, chairman of the Hospitality Committee, of the N.Z.W.G.A., is chiefly interested in New Zealand as owner of Woodslee Downs, Southland. Ho also owns an estate in British East Africa, and is part owner of a cotton and tobacco j plantation in Portuguese Nyasaland. 11l 1910 he contested Carlisle in the Unionist interest, and is still the Unionist candidate, but perhaps his most interesting activity since the war has been tlie establishment of a shell factory in the Midlands. London, October 12. Pte. G. V. Richardson (Auckland), of the Naval Brigade, who is interned in Holland, is home on a month's leave. Lieut. H, G. Carter (Wellington), of the N.Z.R.8., andi Lieut. W. P. Bell, of Tauranga, were in Loiidon last week from Brockenlnirst. Miss Marjorio Phillips, daughter of Mr. P. A. Phillips, of lias just arrived in England, and will' shortly be married to Lieut. K. S. Williams, as soon as he can obtain leavo from tho front, where he is serving with the Canterbury Infantry BSttalion. The many friends of the Hon. \V. Pember lteeves will he pleased to hear that ho has returned to London after his illness greatly improved in health, and 'has temporarily resumed his duties as Director of the London Sshtfol of Economics and Political Science. Tho High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Mackenzie, and: Mr. T. H. Hamer, audit offider, attended tho funeral of Corpl. W. J. Sloan, of tho N.Z.M.C., which took place on Monday last at Xensal Green Cemetery. Tho deceased's father, mother, and sister..were present at tho graveside, and! a largo number of his friends and comrades. Several boautiful wreaths were laid on tho coffin, including ono from Sir Thomas Mackenzre and the N.Z.AV.C.A.
Mrs. C. A. Wihtney, of Auckland, has aVrived in England to be near h'er two sons, who have been in tho army for two years.. Ono has a commission in tho R.F.A., and tho other is with
the New / Zealandcrs attached to the No. 2 Field Ambulance as an ambulance driver. Mrs. AVhitney already visited -woimdefl—Jttocklanders in the Walton-on-Thames Hospital, and hopes later on to take up war work in Fiance or in this country. Prior'to Sir James lUifis's departure for Now Zealand a number of farewell gatherings were held. Sir Thomas and Lady Mackenzie gave a luncheon in his honour at -the British Empire Club on October 4. The guests included Lady Hardwicke, Lady Bell, Lady Findlay, Lady Milty, Miss' Mackenzie, Lord l'lun,Kot, Lord lianfurly, Sir James Carroll, Mr. James Coates, and Mr. 11. D. D. Maclean. At the Oriental Club Sir Thomas Robinson, Agent-General for Queensland, gave a'farewell dinner to Sir James Mills, on October 3, at which Sir Thomas Mackenzie was present.
