FLOWER SHOW AT HUTT

•A GREAT DISPLAY; Always a pleasant function . is tlio '.annual-flower show at the Hutt. Num•bers'.of people!go out from town and establish a "cordialo entente" with their flower-loving friends in the. Hutt. The Drillshed was just a blaze of bloom yesterday, and the warm summer air was heavy with the perfume of hundreds of lovely roses and carnations. Mr. C. Trevethick , was accorded the Royal Horticultural Society's silver medal for his fine display of sweet peas. 'Above his exhibit was the device,' quaintly worked in sw-eet peas, "Rule Britannia." Many prizes for sweet peas were taken by F. Westbury, and another exquisite display of this everpopular bloom was made by Mr. C. Izard, who was accorded a special • award of a silver medal. Mr. Izard judged, all the exhibits of sWeet peas except his own. A large number' of nurserymen were showing.flowers of all kind?. Mr. Frank Mason's roses, from Feildirig, were very fine. He secured a second prize,, with a Mrs. Hugh Dickson. Mr.' W. B. Hardy showed some glorious gladioli, large •wax-like blooms, brilliant and beautiful. 'He re'ceived a bronze medal. .His lilium ; umballatum (orange-lily) was- much admired, and his roses were very good. ■Miss Charleswortli displayed the. cliam-

pion bloom of tho show, a fine Natalie Botner. She also got a first prize for six best blooms •. (mixed). Mr. H. Poole's exhibit of pot plants, ornamental and flowering, was quite up to his usual, high standard. Dr. Purdv won three first prizes for - his beautiful roses, and one second. Mr. Waugh, of tlie Hutt, showed about 150 blooms, and scoured a silver modal. Other prizewinners were: —Eperguo of / roses, ill tints of red, Miss W. Hobbes, 1. Bowl of roses, ,Miss Hamilton, 1; Miss W. Hobbes, 2. Epergne of sweet ,peas, Miss: W. Hobbes, 1. . Bowl of sweet peas, Mrs. R. R. Orr. Basket of carnations, Miss W. Hobbes. Several dinner-tables 'were decorated for competition, and were voted for during tho afternoon.

Miss Haywood was in charge of the tea-room, and her assistants were Mesdames Mirams, Mabin, Graham, Robertson, Bothamley, Ashly, Duncan, and the Misses Douglas, Rathbone, Purdy, and Harris. The cut flowers and cakes were in charge of Miss Dora Wilson and Miss Doris Dall. Mr. Haywood (the president) and Mrs. . Haywood • entertained a number of tlieir friends at tea, amongst whom were: the Rev. Hansell arid Mrs. Hansell, Mesdames Mirams, Von Zedlitz, H. Gore, Baird, Asbv, Duncan, and the- Misses Moore (of \Vanganui), Skerret't,: Baird, and Foster. Other ladies who attended the show were: Lady Hector, Mesdames J. Barton, Rankine Brown, Menzies, Purdy, Harris, and many others.
