Army Nurses in Hospital. One nurse and two sisters of the New Zealand Forces on activc service were reported to be ill in hospital in tho hospital and progress report issued by the Base Records Office yesterday. They were stated as "not severe cases'" Tho nurses are' Nurse. E. 31. Curtis, 22/229 (R. R. Curtis, Feilding, f.), and Sisters I. L. Bennett, 22/14 (M. W. N. Bannott, Russell) and K. F. Kitching, 22/135 (Mrs. C. R. Grant, Oamaru, sis.). The Red Cross Shop. Mrs. Fletcher Reilly gave an at home on Tuesday afternoon in honour of Mrs. Murray Thompson, who is shortly lejjving New Zealand to reside in Melbourne. There was a largo attendance of ladies who are interested in, and have worked so hard on hehalf of, the Red Cross Shop. Mrs. Thompson was the originator of f.lio idea of establishing a Red Cross Shop in Wellington, and, in partnership with Mrs. Reilly, was responsible for the opening of tho shop in Woodward Street on February 19 last. It was mentioned during the afternoon that a total profit of about £430 has been mado during the nine months' operations. Mrs. Thompson was heartily thanked for the exceedingly hard work which she has done in order to help to inako the venture a success, and cordial wishes were expressed by all for happiness in lior new home, and for continued success in her Red Cross work,, which' she hopes to resume upon her arrival in Melbourne.. Mrs. Thompson expressed her appreciation ..of tho good wishes which had been extended to her, and said that she would greatly miss her friends of the Red Cross Shop, and of tho St. John Ambulance Brigade Red Cross Depot.

Mrs. Mary Tregear (mother of Mr. Edward Tregear,,l.S.O., of Wellington) died in Auckland on Sunday, aged 92. Tho deceased lady was the widow of tli6\latO"Mr. William .Tames'Tregear, R.N., a captain in the P.- and 0. Company's 'service,' who died on his iSliip in tho Indian Ocean in August, 1859. She arrived in Auckland in 18C3, and, remained there until her death. The surviving members of the family arc Mr. Edward Tregear, Miss Tregear (who is now superannuated aftor many years' service in the Education Department), and Mrs. H. C. Morrison, widow of the late Major Morrison, of the New Zealand Permanent Artillery. Since her husband's death, 57 years ago, there had been no deatli among any of her children or numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Tlia Y.M.C.A. Triangle Depot will lie opened this week-end for the last time beforo Christmas. Mesdames Wright, Piper, and Laurenson will be in charge on Friday, and Mesdames Waterhouse and Montague on Saturday. Ail assortment 'of Christmas cakes, plum puddings, flowers, and sweets will bo offered for sale. Proceeds go to the Trench Comforts Fund.

The death occurred at Dumfries recently of Mrs. Hums Brown, granddaughter of Scotland's national poet, at the age of 85. Jane Emma Burns iras the daughter of Itobert Burns, the eldest son of the poot, and Emma Bland', and was born in London, wliero her father held a clerkship in the Stamp Office until 1883, when he retired, and removed to Dumfries. His daughter married the late Mr. Brown, who was foreman carder in tho tweed mills in Dumfries. Going to Canada, Mr. Brown followed his occupation at Guelph, Ontario, but tho family returned to Dumfries after an absence of eight years. Mrs. Brown had a strong resemblance in features to her distinguished grandparent. She also possessed a musical voice, and sang with fine effect many of his lyrics. Her house was a place of call to 1 admirers of the ]ioet from America and from many other parts of the world. For some years Mrs. Brown and her late husband had charge of the house in Burns Street in which the poet died, and which is under tho control of the Town Council, hut tho infirmity of age obliged her to give up that duty about eight years ago.

Patriotic Cake Room. The committee of the Patriotic Cake Room acknowledge with thanks gifts of home-made cakes, sweets, subscriptions, etc., from the following donors:— Jlr. and Mrs. Firth, Mesdames Smitton, Badham, Christie, Millward, Findlay, Holmes, Hurst, Palmer, Isaacs, Hamer, G. The committee of the M.L.G.C. Pat-, riotic Cake Room have decided to continue their stall in Hannah's Buildings every Friday as 'usual, and in future to hand over each month all the money taken there to the Wellington Red Cross Shop, which is opening on December 15, and which money is to be sent to England for our boys on active service. To-morrow is to be a Red Cross Day at Miss TondalPs Tea Room, Featherston Street. In addition to the usual lunch and tea, there will be plain and fancv goods for sale, also homemade sweets and cakes, and a flower stall. The Mayoress (Mrs. Luke) will porform the opening function at 10.30 a.m. Admittance, both morning and afternoon will be Is., tea included. During the afternoon Signor Vadala's string quartet will play, and a fortunetoller will be in attendance. In the evening at 8 o'clcok, in tho Ooneort Chamber of the Town Hall, Sir Arthur Pinero's laughter-raising farce, "Dandy Dick," will be read by ivoll-known members of tho Readers' Club. Miss Marjory Nicholls will recite, and Mr. Harry Tombs's orchestra will play. Admission will bo 25., reserved (box plan at tho Bristol), and Is., unreserved. Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Liverpool, His Worship the Mayor and Mrs. Luko have granted their patronage. All proceeds arising from botli day and evening entertainments will be cabled direct to tho Red Cross Headquarters, London. There was a very largo attendance nt. tho weekly meeting of the N.Z. Natives' Association Ladies' Guild, which was held at the Natives' Hall on Tuesday evening. Mrs. M'Yicar ,was in tho chair, and tho reports from the different committees wore quite satisfactory. All members'haro been kopt exceedingly busy lately, and an -energetic committee have the arrangements for the tea at the Town Hall next Saturday well in hand, and would be glad to receive any. further donations of money or goods which could be sent to Mrs. M'Yicar; ,27 Brouaham Street. Sir Ernest Shackle ton, wlio was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. L. Tripp, visited tho Soldiers' Club on Tuesday evening., Tho distinguished visitor was enthusiastically received by the men, and shook hands with everybody present. Hearty cheers were given for Sir Ernest Shackleton before he left the club. Mrs. Guy Didsbury is staying with her mother, Mrs. M'Dougall, of Pii'inoa. Miss 'Minnie Waugh (Mrs. Campbell Orr), of Melbourne, who is taking the soloist soprano's part_ in tho "Mes« siah," is staying at Miss Maloolm's. _ Mrs. Simcos, of Forest Lakes, Otaki, is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Keeling, of Karori.
