WOODVILLE MEETING MANUK'OA WINS BIG HANDICAP. (By Telegraph'.—Special Correspondent.) Woodville, December G. 'l'lio Woodvillo Jockey Club's meeting opened to-day in line iveatlier. There was a large .attendance and some good Tacing whs witnessed. Tho totalisator receipts were ns against iE14,12'l last year. There was, a very big field in the Maiden Plate, but the speculation was confined to Hymenostra, Form Up, and Mascot, who were backed in that order. ■The Foal Stakes' candidate won very comfortably. He. and Noil' went out in front, and 600n had the field in tronbli. I'om "Up was always prominent, but though lie was an easy second he could make no impression on tho two-year-old, who, all tilings considered, gavo a good return to his supporters. Wapping was finishing on in third place, and then came AVaimatoa, Mascot, and Zimmere. After the race negotiations were entered into for the purchase of Wapping. The prospective buyer is tho Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, and if a sale is effected the horse will join J. Sl'Laughlin's team. ICurapai had tho biggest followin; in the Hack Hurdles. At the start Mount Victoria played up, and in addition to spoiling liis own chance lie cannoned into Jem. Atuatoro and Conziska went out in front for six furlongs, with tho favourite and Surtax haudy. With six furlongs to go, Conziska was in trouble, and The Summit, and Sir Fisher improved their positions. Tho latter and ICurapai went to tho second to liist fence together, where the favourite gained pound by his jumping. In tlio straight he held his own and won nicely from Sir Fisher, with Mania Park and Mount Viotona following. Tho runner-up showed great promise, and should soon credit his owner with a stake. Of the others, Atuatoro did the best. He is & typical hurdler in appearance, and .should" win plenty of jumping races. Mount Victoria was a furlong behind at ono part of the race, and did. wonderfully well to get fourth. The first time he leaves tho mark terms with his field he will givo them 6onio trouble to eaten him. Another well-baoked one, in Antwerp, prevailed in the Grandstaona Hack Handicap., He began well, and was steadied down the back, but got no further away than fourth. He was always going comfortably, and the issuo was not in doubt at any stage of the race. The lightweight, Tornea, and Mystified were in the van going down the back, and were prominent into the straight, but the favourite then shot out and won by several lengths. Thero was a good race for second plAcc, and Maraetotara just lasted long enough to hold off Haumakaka. Mysteriach did well to get fourth, and then came Namur and Fore. ,Teka will do a lot better at the next start.

Tho big handicap provided the best finish of the day, though the victory would hare been more popular had the top-weight got ilis head in front. Bjorneborg and Chortle were backed in that order, but while the favourite failed badly the top-weiglit ran. a very creditable race, and the honours were all his, for he did not get a good passage, and had to go ripund the field on the turn into tho straight. He was giving Orleans and Maniaroa a start of about three lengths over the last furlong, and did well,to separate them. Blackall ran a lair.race, and was finishing on. He is a bit above liunself yet, but another three woeks will make a big difference in his condition. Zeus. Hopcite, and Ararat ran well in the early stages of the raco, but all failed to seo out tho journey. The winner was one of the least faiicicd on the machine.

The top-weight Ayah was the most fancied for tho Flying Handicap, but a little bad luck at the barrier spoilt any chance she had of beating Black Lakq, who was in recept of 201b. At tho start Multaine, Comment, Probation, the Baronet, and Carlatour were tho most prominent, with Ayah well back. Bounding tho turn Black Lake moved up to a position just behind Carlatour and Comment, w:ho wero out by themselves. The All Black filly took charge entering tho straight, and cleared out from the field. Ayah ma-do a great effort from behind, but the winner had a good margin as- the post was. reached. Golden Glade, and Probation were the next to finish.

The Borough Handicap provided a voryjcloso finish, as was suggested, by the machine. % Glenroy, Brtfdamante, Black Ada, and Marshall wero evenly backed. At the start Glenroy led from Marsinah and Peronal. Across the bottom Black Ada and Trials ran up to tho leador, and tho trio entored tlio straight together. Glenroy was the first in trouble, and Black Ada and Trials settled down for the,finish. Tho mare quickly mastered' Trials, but was unable to withstand lato runs by Bradamanto and Hushabyo. Tavistock ran well to tho straight entrance, whero ho faded out of it and finished last. Peroneal, Trials, and Veto wore just behind tho placed division. After tho , race the owner of tho third horso protested against the second horse on the ground that some of his gear had been dropped and picked up by a third person. Tho facts were not disputed, but the Stewards did not consider tho item of sufficient importance to alter the judge's placing.

An Auckland Cup candidate in Alteration was a red-hot order in tlio Welter Handicap, in which he had th® minimum impost. Ho began .smartly and led throughout, winning very easily. Matlock kept him company for six furlongs, when tho top-weight ranged up, but he was no uso to tho winner, and Sir Wallaco also headed him for second place. Amity was fourth and Syntax next. Crown Imperial II ran very badly. Tho winner is a big greon colt, but ho appears to be capable of winning plenty of good races, though an Auckland Cup seams to be beyond him this year, as Jie is not a light boy's horse. A protest against the winner for interfering with the second horss in tho straight was dismissed. Menelaus was tjio unlucky horse in tho Electric Handicap, and the' Trentham horse 6hould have won by lengths. _ Marimba was favourite, and from the inside position she began very quickly, and led Powder Pox and Tino Atua into the straight. Hero Menelaus, who Lvd been chopped out at the start, got up on the fenco, but he again met trouble and was 6eut back. M,ariinba, Tino Atua, and Menelaus wore fighting out tlie finish when Spectual got up on the outside, and won by a bare length. The other three were in a line. MAIDEN PLATE, of 65 sots.
