HOSPITAL SHELTERS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—By the mail iust in I have received, through my son-in-law, Capt. Robertson, N.Z.M.C, Walton-on-Thames, an acknowledgment from Colonel Parkos, D.D.M.S., of tho J/ondon Headquarters Staff of tho Now Zealand Expeditionary Force, or the cost of twelve hospital shelters that were recently donated by a few friends on this side. Colonel Parkos .in his letter writes as follows:— "The advantage of such shelters is not only for phthisis patient's, as at first intended, but also for severe surgical cases, which have been proved, to recover much more rapidly in open, air and sunlight. It is difficult to estimate tho actual value of .such a gift, but money could not ho more profitably employed than in providing for the 6ick and wounded the . most favourable environment for recovery. A .further advantage of tho shelters is tho ease with, which they can be packed for transport after the war to New Zealand, where they will continue in great demand as necessary auxiliaries to our hospitals, and be highly appreciated." - Unfortunately Colonel Parkes treats the' gift as being one from myself, an, impression that I wish, with your permission, to at once correct. I merely collected tho donations somewhat hurriedly in response to a cable appeal. The bare cable advice that I sent, that the amount required to cover the cost of twelve shelters had been remitted, no doubt accounts for the misunderstanding. The donors were as follow: — Levin and Co., Ltd. Jos. Nathan and Co., Ltd. W. M. Bannatyne and Co., Ltd. Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers., Johnston and Co., Ltd. Joseph Joseph. G. H. Scales, Ltd. D. Robertson. D. A. Ewen. Mr. and Mrs.G. Fitzgerald. A. S. Paterson. James Macintosh. G. Shirtcliffe. The total amount subscribed was £176 Bs., which, the National Bank kindly cabled free of charge, while a list of the donors was forwarded 1 by mail to Capt. Robertson at Walton.— ' I am, etc., . G. SHIRTCLIFFE. Wellington, December 3, 1916.
