A dispatch from General Sir Archibald Murray (Commander-in-Chief in Egypt), dated October 1, covers the operations in Egypt from June I to September 30. Sir Archibald Murray, in detailing the operations at Katia, praises tho work of the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Infantry and the Australian _ Light Horse in observing and harassing the. enemy's, advance. "The complete result of the operations was the,decisive defeat of eighteen thousand of the enemy, including fifteen thousand rifles. Four: thousand were taken prisoner. The total enemy casualties were about nine thousand. Major-General H. G. Chauvel (Australia) proved himself a resolute and resourceful cavalry leader. "The brunt of tho whole fighting fell upon the Australian and New Zealand mounted men. I cannot speak too highly of the gallantry, steadfastness, and untiring euergv these fine troops lave shown. Patrolling duties along the western edge of tho Canal zone were entrusted to two Australian squadrons. The whole forco displayed the greateist tact and resource with the result that the western Canal zone can he said to be free of all unauthorised persons." The dispatch draws attention to the devotion of the Australian and New Zealand Nursing Services. A subsequent dispatch mentions General Chauvel, Colonels Chaytor, Royston, Antill, Meredith, Walshe, Downes, Wilson, Fuller, Onslow. Maygar, Grant. Dixon, and Croll (Australia), and Colonels Mackersy, Findlay, and Meldrum (New Zealand), and also ninety-five Australian officers and men and eight nurses, and twenty-one New Zealand officers and four'nurses.
