PELTED WITH EGGS
ADJSLA. I'ANKHUHSTS EXHSBI'ENOE. As a result of tho forcible presentation of highly-flavoured eggs to Miss Adela Paukhurst and Mr. W. J. Scfi ton, of Youarang, on October 7, twolvo residents of Katamatito were charged recently before tho Court with behaving man offonsivo way. They were discharged with a caution on promising to make a contribution to tho funds of tho lied Cross Society. Tho urosocution stated that on October 7 Miss Adola Pniiklmrst and the chairman of her meeting, Mr. Softon wcro going to .Youarang from Katamatito, when they wore pelted with eggs. Prior to this Miss Paukhurst and Mr. Softon had gone into tho post office, and during their absence tho buggy seat had boon liberally besmoared with eggs. Miss Paukhurst and Mr. Softon returned to Katamatito and gavo information to tho police. Defendants had all mado statements admitting they had thrown eggs. Ho did not hear Miss Panklmrst at a mooting advising young men not to talto the oath to servo their country, but she' told them that tho proclamation was illegal.. He knew Mr. Scfton had four sons of military ago, and had heard it stated that ho (Softon) had said sooner than let them light against the Germans ho would see them shot. Defendants' solicitor said his clients had pleaded not guilty in order to got tho facts stated in Court, 'l'liov now asked for the plea to bo withdrawn, and a plea of guilty substituted. These young men wero so incensed at Miss Panlthurst's disloyal viows that they determined to teach her a lesson. The general opinion in Katamatito was that she and her chairman got what they deserved. The Sub-luspcotor said ho was not out for scalps, and desired' to givo tho young inen a chance.
