RED CROSS SALESROOM
A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME. A largo number of ladies, representing various societies, guilds, and districts, responded to the Mayoress's invitation to meet the Red Cross- Committee at the Town Hall and discuss the ways and means of setting up a Red Cross Shop. The Mayoress was in the chair, and Sirs. J. P. Firth, the hoii. secretary, was beside her. Those present were: The Red Cross Committee, Mesdames \Y. Nathan/Moorkouse. and L. Blundell, Catholic Knitting Guild (Mrs. Gamble), Misses Cooper and Moss (Miss Cooper), Women's National Reserve (Mrs. Porter), Victoria League (Miss Coates), Spinsters' Club (Miss J. Myers), Miramar (Mrs. Rowiitree), Seatoun (Mrs. Fuller),.N.Z.N.A. Ladies' Guild (Mrs. M'Vicar), Hobson Street (Mrs. Brandon), Paraparaumu and Waikanae (Mrs. H. Hadfield), AVadastown and Johnsonvillo (Mrs. Willis), Miramar Ladies' Golf Club (Miss Wheeler), and Mesdames Cornish and Fuller (Mrs. Cornish). Miss Robieson, representing the Wellington Nursing Division of St. John, and Miss Coull, for Day's Bay, were unable to attend. Mrs. Firth read correspondence from Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, who consented to become a patroness of the shop; also from the Miramar Ladies' Golf' Club, who had decided at a meeting held on Wednesday night to guarantee the rent of the shop for at least six months, instead of taking a day. A letter from.Otaki was read, stating that the ladies there could not take a day, but would collect produce from timo to time; also that an offer was being considered of malting a donation from the locill Red Cross Shop to the Wellington Shop. The Victoria League wrote offering to take a day after February. • Mrs. Firth reported that a room had been secured over the ABC garage on Lambton Quay, at a rental of £3 per week, and that a donation towards the fund of £50 had been received from Mr. J. Kirkcaldie. Also that it was probablo that country donations would be carried free on the railways. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Kirkcaldie for liis generous donation, aud to 'the Otaki ladies for their offer. Mrs. Firth was appointed secretary for the committee, and Mrs. Bush treasurer, and an executive of five members was elected, consisting of Mesdames Porter, Cornish, W. Nathan, M. Vicar, H. Hadfield, with the officers of the committee. After some discussion it was dccidod that the room 1 ho called the "Wellington Red Cross Shop." The question of sending the money taken to the New Zealand representative of tho British Red Cross in England was again discusscd, and it was' again decided to send it dircct to the ■New Zealand representatives. It was decided to add to that motion that funds should be for general distribution among New Zealand men) and that a periodical report should be asked for, as to how tho money is being expended. Mrs. Luke explained that money sent to tho Red Cross in England was for tho uso of men in liospitals in France, Egypt, or eisewlierc. Some discussion took place as to tho amalgamation of Misses Cooper' and Moss's flower stall with tho Red Cross Shop. Miss Cooper-stated that tho profits had never been lower than £20 per month and their higliest had totalled £73 in one month. It was agreed that the flower depot should be moved to tho Red Cross Shop, and that tho simp guarantee the £20 a month promised by Misses Cooper and Moss to the Lowry Bay Convalescent Home, and tho donation was to continue to be sent in their names. The shon will bo opened on Tuesday, December 12, when tho Red Cross Committee will bo in nliargo. It will be open on the following Friday and Tuesday, after December 22, will close for a fortnight, re-opening on Friday. January o. It will bo open every Tuesday and Friday, and Misses Cooper and Moss, will take charge of tho flower stall each 'day. Mr. and Mr*. Charlie Bennett are at the Hotel Cecil. Mrs. Cockburn-Hood is spending a few days in town. Mr. and Mrs. St. Hill, of Hastings, are staying at tho Empire Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. and Norman Beethain and Miss Wardell are in town to see Mr. Wardell, who is in hospital. Miss Vallance is staying with Miss Chalmers oil the Terrace. Mrs. Archer Hosking and Miss Belle Vallance are at the Hotel Cecil. They have come to see Miss Bennett off to the Old Country. , As a result of the patriotic rose and sweet pea show held in Masterton on AVodnesday, it is hoped to band over £70 to the Lady Liverpool Committee. Miss Una Carter's usual weekly cooking demonstration was held oil Wednesday afternoon at the Gas Company's ofliccs. Full instructions as to how to use a gas cooker were given, and the following was the menu for the afternoon: Chocolate log, coconut kisses, puff pastry, walnut and cheese horns, rice cheese, and gooseberry jam. Miss Carter will be pleased to call on any person having a gas cooker who does not know how to use it. A woman likes fo consult a. woman
