Sporting' circles are discussing Mr. Holman's proposaL to introduce tho totalisator as a Government monopoly. They consider that dual control would detrimentally affect racing. • Others' ask why the system 'of club' control, operating in Noir Zealand and other States, should be changed. -In. his Budget speech, Mr. Holman said that although it -would bo impossible to do so' at present, in future years lie intended to, earmark the totalisator returns for patriotic and charitable purposes; The Marlborough Racing' Club is endeavouring to arrange with the Union Steamship Company for an excursion steamer to run from Wellington to Picton arid back on each day of the Summer Meeting, to be held on February 7 and 8 next. The club's' programme is the best yet put out, the stakes being considerably increased, and should' get great support frorii owners in the North Nominations for events to-1« run at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close with the Secretary, Mr. C.
