ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL

The meeting of the Onslow Borough Council held last evening was presided over by tho Mayor (Air. C. 0. Crump), and there were also present: Councillors J.qG. Smith, W. Applctpn, A. 10. Budd, J. 21. Dale, A. W. C. Palmer, L. A. Browne, and J. C. Gardiner. Tho resignation of tho office assistant, Mr. A. Barker was accepted, and the Finance Committee was authorised to invite applications and fill the vacancy. Councillor J. G. Smith was granted permission to withdraw the 'motion, of which he had given notice, "That tho counciHake steps to erect a permanent memorial to those residents of the borough who have enlisted." Councillor Smith said that after reconsidering the matter, and discussing it with others, hq had come to the conclusion that each ward must arrange for its own memorial. Councillor Appleton suggested that tho memorial should bo in the form of scholarships, and not useless masonry. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the council on Monday, December 18. The local Horticultural Society propose holding a show on December 13, the proceeds to bo devoted to patriotic funds, and the society was granted' the free use of the hall. A letter from the Port Chalmers Borough Council with respect to the 10 per cent, war bonus was received.'
