Tho return Issued by tho Board of Trade showing the output of coal In' tho United Kingdom during the first half of tho year discloses an increase, of 515.0C0 tons,' or 0.4 per cent., as compared with the corresponding period of 1915, and this in spite of a decrease in the number of men engaged In the mines. The improvement, which occurred in tho June louarter to a- sufficient extent to offset a falling off in the March quirter, was well distributed, only Yorkshire, Lanoasliirc, Cheshire, North Wales, and the East of Scotland recording appreciable declines. Of tho six months' total production of 128,135,000 tons 20,932.000 tons was exerted, leaving 107,203,000 tons, including 6.578.000. tons used by steamers in the foreign trade, for Home consumption. In the first half of 1915 of the output of 125.559,000 tons 22.726.0C0 tons was exported. leaving 102,833,000 tons, including 6.231,000 tens used by tho mercantile marine, to meet the Home demand. INSURANCE AGAINST RIOTS. The Melbourne ."Argus" of a recent date says:—"Tho growing want of confidence in
the ability of Australian Governments to govern is bringing a substantial increaso of business to insurance' companies. Amongst tho risks which are not covered under tho universal policy conditions, tho ■ordinary flro policy docs hot Includo loss or damage occasioned by riots or civil commotions. Mauy property-owners have come to tho couoluGion that it would bo wise to protect themselves in this connection, more especially in respect to their business premises. Both in Mclbourno and Sydney recently a largo amount of insuranco. against damage by-civil commotion has been placed, and. although the rati of premium is not an extravagant one, tho aggregate must reach a considerable sum. By many insurers, however, tho outlay is regarded as being provided by the Government, for the reason that tho excess profits will be reduced by the amount of tho premium, thus making their capital secure at no expense to themselves."
