THE MARKET RESERVE
_4 WHAT IS TO BE DONE WITH THE LAND? At tho meeting of the City Council last uvening, Councillor W. T. Hildreth asked the Mayor if the council had decided what was to be done with the land in the Market Reserve (the Royal Oak Hotel block),. The Mayor said that the question was one on which every councillor was entitled to his own opinion. He did not know what others thought, hut his opinion was that they should clear the whole lot of it out. By doing so they would provide a line open space in tho middle of the city, which would be. a great improvement. Councillor W. H. Bennett said that as each, member _of tho council was entitled to his opinion, his was that a strip- of land adjoining Mr. S. Gilmer's | leasehold property should he reserved for 'the purpose of a. fish market. It was an ideal spot'in the very centre of the city. That should certaiuly be done, and the balance could he made an open space if they liked. Councillor Barber said that -Wellington was tho only city without an open space. • Councillor M'Kenzie: "What about the Post Office Square?" Councillor Barber asked where the "square" was, and, continuing, referred to the beauties of the square in Palmorston North. The discussion then lapsed, as it was considered that there was ample time yet to consider what should ho done with tiiis valuable piece of land.
