— ♦ PEBDICASBBNT OF A I'OUNG MAN. llr. L. G. Keiil, S.M., presided at ti.e Magistrate's Court yesterday. Au able-bodied young fellow, named Francis Win. lieardon, hailing from Australia, found himself in desperate circumstances, and as a last,resort appealed the police, who took him in. Yesterday he was formally charged with h'.mg au idie and disorderly person, in that he had insufficient means of support. Act-ing-Inspector M'Kinnon stated that there was nothing known, against the young fellow, and as lie was an abie-bodiad mau. he thought tlio military authorities would be glad to take him into camp. The case was adjourned in order that the police could communicate with the Defence authorities, and later it vag announced that Eeardoji would be accepted for military service, and would bb taken into camp immediately. THEFT OF A HAM. George _ Edward Sw;u>, for whom Mr. H. ]?. O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to the theft of a ham, valued at lis., the property of the N.Z. Farmers' Co-opera-tive Ham and Bacon Company. Accused was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. .OTHER CASES. Neilie Wood'oriiEjo was 6Pntomed to three months' imprisonment for being an incorrigible rogue, in that she had no lawful means of support. Woodl>ridge had- 10 previous convictions recorded against her. For a cowardly and brutal assault <:n his wife, James Huddle was lined 405., default being fixed at lis day's imprisonment. It- was stated on behalf of accused that .he'was-suffering from partial paralysis of the face; whicli appeared to affect him mentally. For insobriety a batch of half a dozen men, first offenders, were convicted and discharged. Albert Wirm, against whom there were two previous convictions, was fined 10s., in the alternative three days' imprisonment. William 11. Meyer was fined 55., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for disorderly behaviour. A further remand for a week was granted ou tho application of the police in the case of Charles Walters, who pleaded guilty to receiving ,£6 is Si Gd., and fraudulently failing to account for same. It was stated that further,charges were ponding against tho accused. MAINTENANCE CASES. Alexander Johnson, in arrears to the extent of .£38'.165. on a maintenance order, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so-long as 7s. 6d. per week is paid off the arrears. 11l the case of John Egbert Hinnis, the arrears, which totalled were reduced by .6200, and an" order made for defendant to pay ss. a week oft' the balance of the arrears, default being fixed at one month's imprisonment. •An order for separation, maintenance, and. guardianship' waa granted in the case of Catherine JB. Eobinson v. William Maurice Robinson, and the latter was ordered to pay 40s. per week towards the maintenance of his wife i and five children. He was also ordered to pay forthwith ,£2 for past maintenance.
