EXCESS PROFITS
ABOLITION OF TAXATION SOUGHT. Mr. Richmond Fell (Nelson) moved at the Chambers of Commerce Conference yesterday:—"Wliilst approving of taxation of war iffofits, this conference is of opinion that the excess profits taxation should bo abolished on these grounds: (1) That the operation is unfair and inequitable. (2) That it tends to check and hamper industry and the development of new business." Mr. Pell said that the idea was to abolish taxation on profits that -were not really war profits. The matter had come under the notice of the Kelson people through the way _in which ,the present system of would adversely affect the fruit industry, which' was just developing. Mr. B. Anderson (Auckland) seconded the motion. Hesaid the commercial community was paying much more than its fair share of this taxation. It was payin? mora than the 'farming community. The Government had messed a great opportunity -by not introducing an export tax. The excess profits method was like shooting a dozen fat chickens to get at the- fat old fox, and that savoured too much of German frightfnlness. The motion was carried. ,
