Mr. Runciman (President of the Board of Trado) has conferred with hotel-keep-ers in regard to the economising of food. Subsequently he conferred with tho manufacturing confectioners on tho question of the consumption of sugar. Henderson (Minister for Pensions) said that probably the pensions for disablement alone would require ten millions to twelve millions annually. Tho greatly improved financial showing of the Pacific cablo is urged as justifying State ownership of an Atlantic cable. FIGHTING IN EAST AFRICA SHARP BRUSH WITH THE ENEMY. (Aust.-N.Z. An official message from East Africa states:—"An enemy force of four hundred, with three guns and eight machineguns, attacked a small post at Lupombo on the 12th to the 14th, but were repulsed with heavy casualties. On the 18th, two British columns enveloped Lupembe, and the enemy fled, abandoning -a gun and forty-seven dead."
